Petition Asks Donald Trump to Merge North and South Dakota to Become “Megakota”

By: ML Nestel
From: Newsweek.com

ONE PERSON FED UP with divisions in the country is setting out to make a change.

A petitioner wants to reimagine the Great Plains by doing away with North Dakota and South Dakota and blend them into one state to become: “MegaKota.”

It's all the brainchild of a pioneering MegaKotan named Dillan Stewart.

Launched on Sunday, the petition comes off like a cartographer’s wily daydream, almost half-heartedly hoping it would gain some traction and one day be considered by the 45th president.

What sort of looney thinks that the President has any power to do that?  Just issue an executive order and "Ta-dah?"

stevopusser Yeah, what kind thinks that an executive order over-rides the constitution. Hard to think of one.

Maybe North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho could all merge into one state and help the electoral college be less stupid.

I have heard it said that there are several US states which, without heavy federal subsidies, would be untennable, be unable to support their populations. Montana and both Dakotas were mentioned. It is often mentioned that if California were an independant nation it would be among the most prosperous in the world. Other staes would simply collapse into ruinous poverty.

If the shut-down continues long enough I guess we'll find out.

Actually: merging several small States and splitting some large ones in half would make a lot of sense, and still keep the Senate at that magical 100 number (101 if you count the VP eh?). It could just be Federal political boundaries, not actual splits like current North & South Dakota, or Virginia and West Virginia...

But then there would be only one capitol. Would North Dakota be willing to sink Bismarck?

While you're rearranging things, would you mind giving back the Northwest Angle?

elgabalo We'll give you Northwest Angle, if you give us everything south of St. Lawrence river upto the Atlantic: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and the southern parts of Quebec that are south of the river. If you want to included Anticosti Island and Magdalen Islands, that's fine too.

The Northwest Angle is our listening post inside our "ally's" territory. Do you think we are fooled by your phony Canadian politeness? You want the NA now. Next, you'll want North Dakota.
On second thought, you can have both of them. You're welcome, eh?

semichisam it's best you acquiesce peacefully, and soon; by the time your border towns begin reporting the playing of the prog-rock of war from beyond the ice-wall, it will be too late.

I keep telling Trump to stop worrying about brown people from the south. It's our northern border that needs the wall.

Gerry1of1 A good part of South Dakota is the same way. The Black Hills are beautiful, but the stretch between them and Sioux Falls is some of the flattest, most boring interstate I’ve ever driven (I-90).

Sturgis is fun, though.

Once a year, if you're a middle-aged biker. South Dakota also has The Badlands, which sounds 'bad' but looks like a monstrous mud flat with gullies.

Now that I think about it, Canada can have South Dakota, too. Then Spearfish and Pierre would be for them to explain.

semichisam Pierre, South Dakota. Never been there. Never even been close. But I've always enjoyed that one answer when memorizing state capitols. "Pierre!" Who names a state capitol "Pierre"?

Brrrr. Looks cold. No thank you. My nuts are plenty cold enough in Pennsylvania.

squrlz4ever "Pierre, South Dakota. Never been there."

You haven't lived. I recommend approaching it from the east. You'll go through Mitchell, where you can tour the Corn Palace. Then leave I90 and go north through Pierre (prounounced 'Pier' like a wharf). Then back south to I90 (for god's sake, don't lose it) and on to Wall, famous for having a well, Rapid City and Spearfish.

MOTTO: "South Dakota! It's better than North Dakota!"

(I went to Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. It's better than South Dakota.)

semichisam All these years I've been mispronouncing South Dakota's state capitol. Once had a terrific crush on a girl who graduated from Elizabethtown College.

So did I when I was there. She asked me if I was serious enough to want to marry her. Scared the shit out of me.

If my brain had been getting the blood supply that was going to my gonads, I would have said yes.

semichisam if your brain was getting the blood supply instead of your ‘nads then she would have been the wrong gender for you.

semichisam Middle Aged? Hope so.

Biker? No.  Just happen to run through Sturgis during one rally. Made it hard to find a room in Wall, SD.

Gerry1of1 Greg Brown has a song about that land. People on the plains will tell you there is nothing between them and the North Pole but barbed wire.

Gerry1of1 "The official state tree is the Telephone Pole"

That's because it is the prettiest tree that grows in the Dakotas.

Naw! They're still in hibernation, with their alarm clocks set for February 2nd for the ceremony.
If the prairie dog doesn't see his shadow, it means two more months of South Dakota.

squrlz4ever I've been waiting for that South Dakotan to weigh in.

I have to admit that the telephone pole that grows in South Dakota is the Lodgepole Pine. It grows in the Black Hills. Most of the prettiest landscapes in SD are in reservations, and much of that is wild and forbidding. If you don't leave I90, you don't see the state.

I've never been to North Dakota, but I've been told it's about the same as South Dakota.
