In preparation for the 2022 World Cup scheduled to be in Qatar, a new stadium is being built dubbed The Vagina Stadium based upon it's controversial shape.

What thoughts (or jokes) do you have on this one IAB?

Gerry1of1 ... cannot in the opinion of His Majesty's Government be classified as slavery; at least, that word in its full sense could not be applied without a risk of terminological inexactitude.

W. Churchill, 1906. With regard to Chinese labourers in S. Africa.

Gerry1of1 No, it refers to how governments parse the definition of slavery so that they can turn a blind eye to the reality. Was I unclear? Slavery, murder, torture, genocide; governments tweak the language when it suits them so that they can continue business as usual with the most vile of regimes.

It's a fairly well known quotation meaning "Yes, it is slavery but it is not politically expedient to name it as such."

I've posted at least two articles on workers' conditions in Qatar, so I'm not sure whyb you are being snotty about it.

LordJim I thought Qatar was awarded the World Cup on condition of ending the Kafala System. Didn't happen I'm guessing?

LordJim I totally agree "slavery" is a misused word. In this case
Indian workers are lured in for jobs, their passports are taken
from them and they are forced to work for no wages.  They are
beaten for disobedience and legally have no status without their
passport on them. They're not allowed to leave.

Walks like slavery. Talks like slavery. .... it's slavery

Gerry1of1 That was rather my point. You and I know slavery when we see it, politicians only see it when it suits them.

LordJim  Politicians only see it when the slaves work for
someone who backed the other party

I am proud to say that is is actually my company who are the engineers for the stadium and all the ancillary buildings. I will try to find some in progress shots and share them.

thenedman Cool. Could you get some shots of the living and working conditions of the labourers while you're at it?

LordJim Yeah, I had heard rumors of almost slave labor being used to construct it.

daegog Back in the 70's and 8o's when I was working overseas the whole area was often referred to as "The Sandpit". Salaries were high and you could live in a bubble if you wanted ( if you were white and connected and played along). Never considered it myself. I've worked in some brutal dictatorships but one has one's limits.
