Open Forum Friday: Brought To You By The 1985 Sears Christmas Catalog

Submitted by: kalron 1 month ago in Entertainment
Remember the days when you would make your Christmas list from a catalog?  Here are some select images I could find of what that use to look like.

Side Question for the weekend:

What was the one Christmas present you remember wanting and actually getting?

You can view the full catalog here.

Anyone else watch the video of Trump's new cheif of staff publicly calling him a "horrible human being" from 2 years ago?

Funny shit. The guy it's such a piece of shit he literally can't find a single person that actually likes and respects him.

Gerry1of1 I had biscuits in gravy at an IHOP in New York a few years ago, I'd wanted to try it for ages, I found it underwhelming. I'm assuming home made would be much tastier.

mrteatime Biscuits come in a tube. Fry some sausage, scoop out some of the meat or hell just chop it up and leave it in there. Don't drain the grease. Start shaking some flour in and KEEP STIRRING! When it's crusty start adding milk until it's thick and bubbly  and you got you some Biscuits and Gravy! Fuck IHOP. Especially in NY. Nobody in New York knows shit all about biscuits and gravy. And if you got a little Squrlz meat laying around well you know.

scheckydamon Aye, didn't care much for IHOP, the smaller diners dotted around were far better. Thanks for the instructions, I'll try making my own, although I'll need to make my own biscuits, won't get those over here.

mrteatime The trick to a great biscuit is to have your fat and water really cold. Your fat can be shortening or a combination of shortening and butter. Go for it!

Gerry1of1 I'm off to a Bloody Mary Party!!!  The wife baked a spinach smoked salmon and goat cheese quiche.  She has the special method where she uses Bisquick mixed directly into the quiche mixture.  As it bakes the Bisquick drops to the bottom creating the crust.

I made a six pack of beer via the liquor store...

kalron Sounds delish.  I do similar with a zucchini pie.  Mix the batter and pour on to veggies of your choice

2 cups chopped zucchini
 1 cup chopped tomato
 1/2 cup chopped onion
 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
 1-1/2 cups milk
 3 eggs
 3/4 cup Bisquick mix
 1/2 tsp salt
 1/4 tsp pepper

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease 10-inch quiche dish. Layer zucchini, tomato, onion in dish. Beat remaining ingredients until smooth 15 seconds in blender on high or 1 minute with hand mixer. Pour over vegetables in dish. Bake until knife inserted in center comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Cool 5 minutes.

These are NOT real people.  They are all computer creations of Nvidia's Neural Network.

The only issue I see here is that there are not enough legitimately ugly people.  I think the computers algorithms have too many pretty people stored, which makes sense because pretty people take more pictures, tons more images of pretty people online compared to ugly people.

it with “him” or “her,” use whom. Who should be used to refer

semichisam01   Indeed you have as a proper English sausage
roll is wonder unto itself.  I know Brits are known for bland food,
but that is a misinformed opinion. WWII US soldiers sampled
the food when rationing was at it's high so food was bland
THEN.  British cooking is excellent. Try Scotch eggs or Welsh
cakes. There is nothing in the USA like
Devonshire clotted cream!

Okay, the Brits are bad at naming food. "spotted dick" ?
"Clotted cream" "toad in the hole" "bubble and squeak"
"blood pudding", "Eton mess"

tinfoilhatsociety In the US or UK? Grade 12 sounds like UK. If you have any IT skills or desire in that path go get an A+ certificate. It's a BS thing but for folks like you with no post secondary  schooling, it's a foot in the door. Looking at about $300 or so. I'm the opposite. 63 with IT skills out the azz, servers on down, but I'm stuck at $15/hr at Amazon doing scut IT work but as I go towards retirement I don't care because the benefits are so good. Interested in fixing medical equipment? Good with your hands and can think things out? There are many tech trainings that can be had. Full boat xray repair,8 weeks, will run $12k but you can get hired out the door at $45k and move up. I was making $120k a year before I got out of medical imaging.
Want to be a chef? Our local trade school has an outstanding culinary school.
There are also programs to help you pay for these so you don't get so far in debt.
Jump up and go get it. You will only ever be as successful as you want yourself to be. You can do this!

scheckydamon Canadian i am. Well what is happening here in the city that  i'm living we had a large increase of immigrants. And if i heard the rumours right, there is a policy that certain industries are putting into effect  where they are only hiring immigrants. I have seen it alot here that being a white in any industry is getting to be rare thing. Taking the bus here for the last 4 months, i only seen 2 white male bus drivers and the rest where non English speaking east Indians. It sucks especial since our jobless rate is slightly increasing. I moved here 4 months ago thinking that a much bigger city would be easier but it almost seems like it's worse. That's the one thing i can have pride in is that i'm virtual not in debt, just a little bit less then thousand in debt. The one dishpit job i had, i was able to bank alot of money, since i was working 12 hour shifts 6 days a week at 18 dollars a hour. But that money is slowly running out. I just want to find a job where i can be working. Nearly 40 and it hard to start in any industry when they are looking for that young buck that hasn't been tainted by other jobs
-1

Male 9,621
tinfoilhatsociety Not yet 40? Damn, you have a quarter of a century left in which to work. If there is something you really want to do you have time.

As my uncle said "Find something you love and you'll never work a day in your life."

Unfortunately he loved heroin; never worked a day in his life.

Joke. Good luck, you are still young.

tinfoilhatsociety Well like I said, you can be what you make yourself. Your ability to be honest here shows that first step is there. Pick a trade, pursue it and show that you're the best MAN for the job. It may mean working for a smaller family type business but if you make yourself that guy that is invaluable to them you can still go far. You're a youngster yet, compared to me, so you have everything to gain. Go man go!

gohikineko Finding the one's I no longer have on EBay at 200 quid makes me unhappy.

True story; got back from my first extended overseas work contract, went home to my old room. Couple of days later;

"Mum, what happened to that case that was under my bed?"

"The one with the old comics?"

" Yes. Eagle/Swift 1966 to 1972. With Dan Dare. Unbroken set in mint condition. That one."

"It was just taking up space so I threw it out."

" OK, that's something that happened."

But for years whenever we were on a trip and there was a Museum of Childhood or vintage comic store I would steer her in.

"Oh, look mum. There's one of those old comics I used to have. Ten quid each. What did I have? About 300?"

Out of all of Netflix's original content, this series is by far the best.  Every episode has been a joy to watch, every season finale heart pounding.  I'm sad to see it end but all good things must come to it.  A riveting story of heroism, friendship and hope...with a few laughs along the way.

gohikineko As I understand it, an increase in 2C does horrible things to the balance of O2, CO2 and pH of the top layer of the ocean.  the vast majority of oxygen generation for the planet happens in the oceans (the forests of the world do suck up CO2, but they also consume a large fraction of the O2 they generate for there own energy needs.  the ocean's phytoplankton generate most of the 02 that we use).  the increase in acidification is currently killing the great barrier reef.

The ocean currents are also pumped by temperature gradients, and messing about with those can do horrible things.  Like when the Gulf Stream was stopped when the ice sheet Lake (Laurentian, I think) was suddenly released into the gulf of the St. Lawrence which caused the Labrador current to stall, you got a little ice age in Europe for a few years.

punko Agassiz in ancient Manitoba you mean? Actually there were a few of them :-) They did indeed flood the whole world, especially Agassiz, it was huge and deep.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Agassiz

These things still happen, but not to that scale, lolz!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glacial_lake_outburst_flood

The Great Reef has had periodic 'bleaching' events for the past 50+ years, it has lately rebounded significantly. Acidity has little to do with the troubles facing reefs: they make the water more acidic themselves by leeching out the minerals they use to grow.

Oh, you're correct about the sheet the huge lakes came out of (including Agassiz)

daegog Right, it is a boon for some places, bad for others. But we're told (unceasingly and without doubt) it will destroy the planet and wipe out the human race... I just don't see it. The planet is getting greener, food production is way up on the same amount of land... I'd like some warm weather here, dammit!

How can they claim to know with precision the exact temperature in 80 or 100 years, but not 1,3,5 or 10 years? Yes yes, 'computer models' which have been utterly wrong so far...

oobaka People died in the name of atheism vs Christianity or Islam?  According to Phillip and Axelrod's encyclopedia of wars, state atheism in the 20th century alone beats anything in further history by 10's if not 100's of millions.

Also, mockery is a form of hate.

monkwarrior Sounds like you came across a meme and cited the source without ever reading it. That would be unwise.
One criticism of the book was that they refused to use AD ('in the year of our lord') to denote years. I don't have the Encyclopedia of Wars, but here's a quote on religious wars:
"Wars have always arisen, and arise today, from territorial disputes, military rivalries, conflicts of ethnicity, and strivings for commercial and economic advantage, and they have always depended on, and depend on today, pride, prejudice, coercion, envy, cupidity, competitiveness, and a sense of injustice. But for much of the world before the 17th century, these “reasons” for war were explained and justified, at least for the participants, by religion. Then, around the middle of the 17th century, Europeans began to conceive of war as a legitimate means of furthering the interests of individual sovereigns." - Wiki

Here, read this article Rabbi instead: Is Religion the Cause of Most Wars? It might help your cause more.

Male 13,505
boredhuman Don't worry it's not a meme, 93% of the wars were secular in nature,  and didn't you read the article?  The article also talks of phillip and axelrod's encyclopedia of wars.

monkwarrior People died by the hands of atheists because they followed a religion or did they die because they were just the wrong people in the wrong place at the wrong time?
If some atheist serial killer killed people at random but all the victims turned out to be christian, would you assume the killer chose them because of their faith?

As for mockery...how is it mockery when I'm just repeating words from your bible?
0
Reply
Male 13,505
oobaka Look to china, the unyielding marxist atheists there are specifically targeting people because they follow religion.  Why be ignorant for your atheism?

It's mockery, here's where you are caught: go find the chapter and verse for your 'repeated words from *the* bible".  You'll find that you actually twisted the words of the bible to suit your mockery to further your hate.

skeeter01 And did you LOOK at this anime? It is obviously intended for a youth audience: doesn't mean adults can't watch too. Like Rocco's Modern Life or Eek The Cat: kids shows that adults can laugh along with. As opposed to Bevis and Butthead or South Park which are cartoons intended for adults not kids... Or The Simpsons which is intended for 'all ages'.

Because YOU are unable to look at a child without thinking of sex is NOT my problem.

gohikineko No, I don't watch anime... and that goes double if it's anime you recommend.  And don't even try to put your perversion on me... you know what you are, you know what the anime you enjoy is.  Trying to claim it's all innocent like "rocko's modern life," or "eek the cat" is ridiculous.

Think about this for a second, you provided a link and said something like "cute show about cute girls doing cute cheering... (It's legal)" - which suggests you know it's pushing the envelope a bit.

Look, this was all just to suggest you keep your fetish private.  It's just making you seem like perv.  But I guess I forgot who I'm speaking to... you don't care how you come across.

skeeter01 Anima Yell! Is absolutely 100% innocent. Both those shows had more "double enterers" and "adult situations" than it does. I know! I was a huge fan of both.

NOOO! Watching it on-line is LEGAL! Because... Crunchyroll! If that's the source of your misunderstanding then I do apologize, ok?

My fetish? LMAO! oh innocent little one, you have NO idea... watching innocent cartoons about innocent things certainly is not it...

Really: you want some good clean anime to start off with? Anima Yell! is a fine choice. Funny, sweet and has an actual plot that adults can watch without falling asleep. Or 'ecchi' which means 'naughty'? Or rowdy, I know quite a lot of shows!

Anime is a massive genre: there's stuff that would knock your socks off if you watched it. Which ones? That's hard to say exactly... honestly: if you told me your interests? I'd be happy to offer good, clean, high quality suggestions.
Monsters? Zombies? Robots? Aliens? Spys? School drama? Romance? Mystery? Historical? Slice-of-life? Angst? Violence? (not my favorite) and most of all: COMEDY! There's anime that will leave your sides aching, I promise!

Hentai is entirely different. That's P0rn or even worse... don't confuse the two ok?

Anyhow: I notice and appreciate your on-topic politeness mate! Hoist a can! Cheers!

semichisam01 got a decent chemistry set when I was about 12 and  a microscope for that year's birthday. There was a pharmacist in my village ( something rare these days ) and I used to spend my pocket money on microscope slides and re-agents and chemicals. I think I became a bit of a favourite of the couple who ran the place.

One day I gave him a list of stuff I wanted for some experiments. He frowned slightly and said, "You do realise that in certain combinations this could make quite a powerful explosive? Still, you're a sensible lad so I'll bag it up."
