This brought to my mind two unrelated things: one was 'A Canticle For Liebowitz'; The other was a recent news article explaining that, for a short-term budget reason, the british Parliament has considered discontinuing the use of vellum to record laws and other meaningful government records. (We can read the original Magna Carta because it was written on sheepskin.)
There are situations in which cost is not an issue.

That was lovely. Watched while having a cup of tea and a crumpet. 

I really love the marginalia you sometimes find in manuscripts, with monkish scribes in Jarrow or wherever complaining about how cold it is and how their noses are running.
