Teenagers Are Boiling Sanitary Pads To Get High

Can we get some IABers to confirm this one?

An excerpt from the Jakarta Post: As bizarre as it sounds, young Indonesians have found another affordable way to get tipsy — boiling sanitary pads and drinking the water.

Police in Jakarta; Bekasi, West Java; and Kudus, Central Java, have arrested several teenagers caught while experimenting with unusual methods of getting intoxicated. Most used menstrual pads to make the formula.

Adj. Sr. Comr. Suprinarto, the head of the Central Java chapter of the National Narcotics Agency, said it was the chlorine in the boiled mixture that created a feeling of "flying" and hallucinations similar to the sensation experienced when taking certain drugs.

"The used pads they took from the trash were put in boiling water. After it cooled down they drank it together,” Suprinarto said, as quoted by kompas.com.

Jimy Ginting, an advocate for safe drinking, said that it was not a new phenomenon.

In 2016, groups of teenagers in Belitung, Bangka Belitung Islands, and Karawang, West Java, did the same.

“I don’t know who started it all, but I knew it started around two years ago. There is no law against it so far. There is no law against these kids using a mixture of mosquito repellent and [cold syrup] to get drunk,” Jimy told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

Used pads? (they came from the trash it said) I don't hardly think so...
Maybe brand new ones if some chemical (toxin) were released by boiling them? But used ones would have... other... stuff in them... so no, sounds made-up.

dm2754 I'm inclined to agree. We see a couple of stories like every year; "Teenagers doing weird stuff to get high." Generally turns out to be nothing of the sort.

LordJim The thing is, that other kids will believe anything. In the sixties, Country Joe McDonald passed out dried-banana-peel joints, as a joke, because there was a rumor that it contained 'bananadine', a powerful psychedelic. For a while every party I went to had some kids smoking banana peels.
No one died of it, but lately they're trying things just as unbelievable, but toxic. We all know that teenage boys suffer from blood drainage away from the brain, but I've confiscated crap that was hard to believe even from them.
