A little spit and polish and it'll be good as new.

monkwarrior A few of the mods were wiped out from contending with a spambot attack last night. I wasn't able to process any content until tonight, thus the delay.

squrlz4ever How about adding another box to the sign up page.  like "write one paragraph of why you should join I-A-B, so we can tell you're not a bot"?

monkwarrior All the mods are eager for an IT barrier to be put in place. There are many options available. That said, Fancy has to be the one to act. I hope he does because asking volunteer moderators to delete literally hundreds of spam comments every day, 24 hours a day, isn't a viable solution.

squrlz4ever How about adding captcha?  or does that cost too much?
Or a qualifying question... something simple like...

I have to take your word for it.

I can't count to 21 unless I'm naked.

Gerry1of1 If all else fails, x=2. (You’d be amazed how often that works.)

Gerry1of1 I'd be doomed to silence. That's funny.

There are lots of techniques to separate ham from spam; many are invisible to the users. Usually it's necessary to combine a few of them because the damned spambots are getting smarter all the time.

All that said, this is really in Fancy's court. We mods can't implement changes to the site's code.

squrlz4ever i can't see all the links deleted but if it's bit.ly links why not just drop any comment with a bit.ly link?  or another url shortener?

Regular users have no need to use them, and they almost always hide the information that shows it to be spam.

I've never seen a regular user post anything but a link that's readable.. like to this post:

monkwarrior Per my comment to Gerry, there are numerous approaches that would help, including something akin to what you're suggesting. Another approach, which can be combined with other methods: Reject comments that are submitted in less than 5 seconds after opening a webpage (real users don't immediately submit comments when arriving on a page; bots usually do).

Again, though, Fancy's the one who needs to make this happen. Changes to the system are out of our paws.
