What's The Deal With People Who Remember Every Second Of Their Life?

Submitted by: holygod 2 months ago in Science

Imagine being able to remember every minute detail of your life. You can recall what the weather was like, what you were reading or what you wore to the shops at any minute, any hour or any day stretching back decades. It sounds like some kind of parlour trick, but it's actually a real and very rare medical phenomenon.

There are ten known cases ever and one of which is actress Marilu Henner.

Total recall... do you think this would be a blessing or a curse, IAB?

Side note: Australians are hot.

My friends always tell me I remember the darnedest things. I remember conversations and events of the past, but something needs to trigger the memory. A keyword, seeing a sign on the side of the road, a smell.

I feel sorry for them. There are a couple of things in my past I'm glad I don't remember.

I have a highly selective memory. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it's a borderline handicap.

So 3 of the ten confirmed cases are women. I wonder what the gender of the remaining 7; Is this perhaps a predominately female thang?

I can only imagine.  When I was a claims adjuster, I would have a working backlog of 100-150 ongoing claims.  Before the stroke, I knew them all by name, what the claim was about, and the current status.  After my stroke, not so much.  The neuropsychologist did come in and test my cognition and memory.  The memory test was a recitation of digits.  He'd state them once, then ask me to recite them back in reverse order.  I got to seven digits, recited backwards, then my mind started to slip.  They were any number, 1-100, not just 1-10.
