Open Forum Friday, One Wish Edition: November 16, 2018

Submitted by: squrlz4ever 2 months ago in Misc

This Open Forum Friday is brought to you by LordJim, who in a recent submission, wanted to know how IABers would respond to the following:

You get one wish (and obviously you can't wish for more wishes). Me, I'd go for "May I always make the right decision."

Truly a stellar topic for an OFF. It touches on values and the meaning of life, no less. The wooden gears in my squirrel brain are spinning away, and I look forward to reading your answers.

Thanks, LordJim, for the great topic!

So I said I'd record my wish here today and looking at the clock, I better get to it. It's pretty mild, so much so that I'm a little embarrassed by it. But having read Minx's reference to "The Monkey's Paw" and similar comments by Gohiki regarding genies and big wishes backfiring, maybe that's a good thing.

I wish that I could be more consistently astonished and excited by the wonders of the Universe.

That's it.

Rationale: When I'm at my best, I can see it: The absolute wonder of everything around us, such as the powerful triple bonds of the nitrogen dimer, without which life on Earth would almost surely have never evolved much beyond algae; or the genius of a man who realized that by distributing small, iron fish in poor countries, he could alleviate the suffering of millions from anemia; or the heartbreaking beauty of the second movement in Mozart's 21st piano concerto. When I have that vision, when I'm functioning on that level, I'm infused with gratitude for being alive and I'm energized. Alas, most of the time that vision eludes me and and mired in day-to-day anxieties or otherwise missing the big picture.

One of the reasons I hang out on IAB is for the privilege this site affords me of being able to share those moments of astonishment, when I have them, with others.

Well, that's it. That's my wish. It's modest and yet it's everything. I sure hope it doesn't backfire. Thanks for the warning, PinkMinx.  :)

squrlz4ever I made a short story (not yet released) about a man that would be excited and astonished by his new environment - the last sentence revealed that it was because he'd lose his memories during the night. #monkeysPaw

7eggert Nooooooo. If that happens to me, 7eggert, I'm blaming you now. Of course, I won't remember this. But I'll write myself a note: "Blame 7eggert. You don't know why, but he deserves it."  :)

squrlz4ever Make it water-resistant, because in another part of the story, I'll reveal that he died from asphyxiation while diving (thus brain damage), was still rescued and given to live in an aquarium as a diver (according to his needs and doing what he liked to do).

cellis1 Hey cellis1, the last submission I see from you is entitled "A to Zeppelin", about 4 days ago. If that is the last thing you've tried submitting, then you're doing it right. I do seem to recall seeing a game submission by you as well, but I can't find it right now (went back a month).

There is a vetting process by the mods before things get posted, and because the mods are on a volunteer basis, we like things to be easy.
So, to help increase the chances of your submission being posted, help out the mods by doing a few things.

First, find a picture suitable for a thumbnail. It doesn't have to be fancy.
Next, if there are any embed codes, such as for YouTube or a game, copy and paste the embed code.
Finally, do a small write up. Us mods don't want to put words in your mouth, so a quick write up will drastically increase the quality of the submission. It doesn't even have to be lengthy. Two or three sentences as to why you like/dislike what you're submitting is all that is needed, or find other pictures to add to the submission.

Now, following that won't guarantee that your submission will be approved, but it will make our jobs easier and increase the chances of your submission being posted.

If you have any other questions, just let us know!
Thank you.

rumham I think the way they played out this season, especially with the absence of Glenn Howerton for some of the filming, was pretty damn great.  I personally loved the All Girls Wade Boggs EP.  I also love how the "Cindy" character was nothing but a troll to fans who were worried about Dennis not coming back.  She appears in the first episode and is never seen or mentioned again.  Brilliant.

If you only have one left, then it's the season finale "Mac Finds His Pride".  My wife and I were literally in tears at the end, and not from laughter.  It was genuinely a moving performance by Rob McElhenney.  He should honestly be nominated for an Emmy.

Be your favorite Superhero. You don't die nor get stuck nor outlive humanity unless you want to. Wounds will heal completely and quite fast, unless they are part of the character. Your relatives/friends etc. aren't in danger because of you, and if you chose, they may still know you. You can also safe them if they happen to be in danger. You'll have a safe home and some free time.

-but-

You have to mostly stay in character. You can't undress nor take of a mask (it won't stink nor stay dirty or broken). You won't starve nor need to use a toilet, but you can eat if your costume allows. No having sex, but you don't mind. You can't use disguising abilities unless it's implied by a mission (No living as an ordinary person, no long "missions" to escape being your character). Your enemies will exist and you have to fight them regulary. They may even torture you, but not for longer than a day per storyline nor capture you for more than 14 days ("not getting stuck"). They won't do permanent damage to other people or property.

squrlz4ever  Some events are fixed points in time and can not be changed (such as JFK assassination

mrteatime is it possible that the doctor would be able to progress in time to  rhe point of infinite finality where as an  observer in time he becomes both the observerver and the observed simultaneously?

thezigrat I think that would be possible, but I believe the TARDIS has fail safes in place to avoid anything to radical from happening.

Male 10,075
mrteatime Ahhh. It is so hard to think of time travel into the past ever being a possibility because of the logical paradoxes involved. The future? Sure. But I don't understand how traveling into the past could ever work, assuming the rules of logic don't evaporate into nothingness somehow. (Multiverses might address this, I suppose.)

Another problem: If traveling into the past is possible, wouldn't we have already been visited by someone from the future already? Only three possibilities exist, as I see it:

1. Anyone traveling into the past automatically creates or enters into another version of the universe, so that the original past remains unaltered.

2. Mankind perishes before we ever reach the technological ability to travel into the past.

3. Time travel into the past is impossible.

Thanks re: the acronym. Got it.

squrlz4ever I always looked at it like this.  It's all about understanding and manipulating the 4th dimension.  I'm sure if we or some other race have ever achieved this at some point in time, we\they would be at a point in time where meddling with time would be a given no-no and we\they would be beyond such trivialities such as greed of self indulgence to alter something as important as time.

There are "theories" (and I use that term lightly) that actual UFOs are not Interstellar vehicles but rather interdimensional vehicles, such as the TARDIS.  It's an interesting black hole to go down on the Googles.

Male 1,213
squrlz4ever I do think time travel into the past is likely impossible, your comment regarding time travelers from the future echoes a similar comment Stephen Hawking made. It's a sound argument. That's what makes the prospect of time travel so enticing, the likely improbability but maybe just a small shred of chance it is possible. It's been a fascination of mine since I was a wee boy.

squrlz4ever Unfortunately you can't use the TARDIS that way.  You can visit any time and any place but you shouldn't be meddling with time, future or past, only observing it.  It's more of a device for scientific research and exploration.  It also produces Jelly Babies!!!

Reply
Male 5,891
squrlz4ever Technically the TARDIS doesn't have those limitations.  However if you are on the TARDIS you are either The Doctor's Companion or The Doctor himself.  Either way, The Doctor would never meddle with time and if you did as a Companion, you would be escorted off of the TARDIS immediately.  You wouldn't want that :)

And Jelly Babies!  You can buy them on Amazon actually.  They are delicious!!!

Gerry1of1 there are several already. it was only the recent one that was bad.  But i hope it ends soon and they realize the mistake to do something more sensible.

Part of each episode that made it good, was the whole..

"Captain's log, star date.. "  And the show was a self contained 'video log' for an incident.

punko Thank you. I want one of those for my bookshelves. I'm trying to find one made of cardboard that I can buy online, but no luck so far. (I'm thinking cardboard will be sturdier and would have some color to it; my printer only does paper and black & white.)

Male 2,015
squrlz4ever it works in black and white, and photocopier printer works fine.  The first one I made was b&w.  The effect only really works with one eye or through a camera lens, but having one off to the side as you walk by, you are immediately caught by something on the shelf appearing to move its head when you walk by.  Its unsettling when you don't expect it

DuckBoy87 Honest reply.  Be happy you have a degree...no one can take that away from you.  Regardless of your field of work, the fact that you educated yourself is what is more important.

Trust me, I am a Master of something that has no relation to what I do for a living, yet it was most relevant in getting me my current position.  Knowledge and education = understanding and truth.

kalron 100% completely fair. But I guess my issues are that my degree is within the field I want to be in, lol
It's eating a lot of humblepie.

I guess my second wish would be that I wish a Masters isn't the new Bachelors, and the Bachelors isn't the new High School Diploma / GED.

I would wish that if god was real he'd show himself.

If he's real, great, he can stop his little game, and we can stop fighting over which god is real and what stories are true, and what god wants. It ushers in an unprecedented world peace.

If he isn't real then we can all stop with these ridiculous mass delusions.

holygod You'd burn like Semele did, so he'd need to show Himself in a disguise and people would start praying to that disguise.
Deut. 4
15 You saw no form of any kind the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully, 16 so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, 17 or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air, 18 or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below. 19 And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars—all the heavenly array—do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping things the Lord your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven.

My wish would be for me and my family to be able to live out the rest of our lives in peace and quiet....a nice place with good weather and a great view of the sea or the valley down below. I am so tired of being in the rat race so to speak.....really?........we work our whole lives in hopes that we are well enough to enjoy it in old age......this seems ass backwards to me. I am seriously thinking about selling it all and just finding my own corner of the world to enjoy. This earth is an amazing place and I would like to see more of it.....enjoy it...take it all in. I would miss very few things from the life I live now.....I can just imagine waking up to the sound of birds and then making some coffee and then chopping some wood and then taking care of whatever needed taking care of. My full time job would be me taking care of myself and my family to the best of my ability. How awesome it would be to grow my own food, build my own abode, learn and live from and with the animals all around me. As humans we are horrible stewards of this earth.....most people could give a shit less. I know this went from a wish to a rant.............sorry. My wish would be to live my life to the fullest.......for me and my family to be able to enjoy what life has to offer besides all the working for someone else, taxes, food recalls, bad drivers, you know....oops ranting again.......:)

Pretty much everything you wrote is why I can't think of a wish.
If you find a way to do that, you will have to do without some things that only money can buy. So think it through, plan it and do it.
I spend fifteen to twenty minutes each morning getting the coffee just right.

Wish? I almost wish I could just abandon my critical faculty and become a mindless idiot Trump supporter.

Life would be so much easier.

I wouldn't have to think. I could put my modern Klan Hood on (MAGA Hat), and walk around thinking I'm so superior to everyone for literally zero reason. I could blame everyone else for my problems and believe that my inability to get a job is the direct result of non-skilled laborers coming across the border.

What a paradise.

I could soak in all the hate, anger and rage so beautifully crafted by Fox News and far-right pundits and peddlers in conspiracy theory. MMMMMMMmmmmmmm. Delicious lies and propaganda. They do all the research and thinking for me!

How lucky I would be.

I could talk myself out of worker's rights, a healthy living wage and healthcare because the big smart businessman told me that we can't afford it after he gave his friends and himself a big Tax Cut...

Oh thank-you for trickling down your piss all over my face Glorious Leader!

I could just IGNORE chapters of New Testament Bible verse telling me to live my life in peace, love and tolerance of others. To judge not lest you be judge. And let he who is free of sin cast the first stone. I could invent a new blue eyed, blonde haired Jesus in my mind to replace the dirty middle eastern refugee who keep trying to cross my borders.

I could judge and hate sexual orientation and use the Bible to do so, but ignore verses instructing me that God alone is the Judge, and you are strictly forbidden by Jesus to judge others unless you are free from sin yourself (Only Jesus was).

Or how Jesus targets the Rich (Trump and Republicans) as least likely to ascend to heaven due most likely to their morals, ethics and failure to share wealth with their fellow man as Jesus did.

As well as his condemnation of people like Trump and many of his supporters where he singles out and targets "greed and depravity", those full of "envy, strife, deceit and malice." Those who "gossip, slander, are arrogant and boastful." Those who "invent ways of doing evil, have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy."

Then, as if talking DIRECTLY to Trump supporters:
"Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them."

I get to never read or face my Lord and Savior pointing out that NO ONE is innocent, given that we all slip up sometimes, it is declared that:

"You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?"

YES! I shall rewrite the Bible and the teachings of Christ in my own uneducated, backward mind. Repeal and Replace the tolerant, compassionate Jesus with a vengeful, orange narcissist! And never even so much as a whisper of doubt would enter my mind. Never would I question my own sanity in doing so.

PURE, UNCUT, HILLBILLY, HIGHGRADE, LIBERAL HATING, IGNORANCE....

Savoring every Trump tweet like a pig at the trough. Masturbating to a leader who finally thinks like me and blames Muslims and immigrants for the hardship in America.

What a treat after that Moslom [sic] President we had to live through for 8 years.

Yelling at people of color. Worrying more about vaccines than white people shooting our nation's children in their schools! Celebrating a flag and monuments to those who took up arms with hopes to destroy America, and soaked the American soil in the blood of American boys who resisted the keeping of black human beings as property.

Oh what a glorious history and heritage!! My heroes!

God be praised. White God. Not that filthy migrant God.

Please Genie... No, none of that Middle Eastern indoctrination. Please White Nationalist Jesus!

Save me!
