One of my neighbors was a high school teacher in Baltimore.  One of her students was given to profound insights and was quoted as once saying, 'Some people just be needin stabbin.'

kelly_hanna One of my favouriite Saki quotations;

 “He is one of those people who would be enormously improved by death.”

I take offence at his statement of "randomly slaughtering" people, dueling is just the opposite of this. You have one target and you only slaughter or be slaughtered that said target,  in theory there is nothing random about it. And again in theory you only fight a person that agrees to duel.
    I am torn about whether this should be legal. Of course there would become a class of people that use this for fame and/or financial gain. IE professionals.

casaledana Dueling is between gentlemen. A professional is, by definition, not a gentleman.

casaledana So I guess we'd have to come up with a legal definition of gentleman, fit for the modern age.

LordJim If challenged by with a duel, one may not use a surrogate. The challenged and the challenger must have some acquaintance.

Something along those lines should suffice.

DuckBoy87 I do think a level of social status is required. One can hardly have ragamuffins issuing challenges.

Traditionally one would qualify as a gentleman if one had held a commissioned rank. If one had an hereditary tile. Landowners without a title... it was moot. Officers could only duel with officers of equal rank and not in time of war.

Of course for a long time any jumped-up tradesman has been able to  buy a title by bribing one party or another so that needs to be examined.

If both parties are of legal age and reasonably sound mind so they understand the consequences, why not?  It's your life, throw it away if you like.

None of my business.
