We heard about this in a post late last week, but here's the video of Nikolas Cruz's interrogation. Pretty haunting.

Watched it again. Chilling. The kid really slipped through the cracks. There have to be dozens of adults who saw the red flags but walked away. Then again, it all goes back to the guardians.

And once you kill animals, there’s no going back. It’s not if you kill another human, it’s when.

Lock him away. Hospital or prison ? Does it matter?  Mental hospitals often have less privileges than jails

Gerry1of1 Very true. I think I would rather go to jail then a damn mental hospital. One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest is very real. Those places are hell.

What an absolute load OF HORSE SHIT.

That is kid is clearly PRETENDING to be crazy.  Has anyone ever been to a youth home where mentally disturbed kids are kept?  They act nothing at all like this.

The only thing that I thought was real were the tears.

Yes, and yes there are some that do act like that. A friend of mine while I was growing up was autistic and schizophrenic, the way he is acting in this video is chillingly similar to what the guy I knew did. When hes pretending to shoot himself, hes literally acting out whats going on in his imagination.

So going back to my point, Yes someone who is autistic and has schizophrenia acts just like this guy.

layla_wilson I think its hard to say.  A couple times in my life I've interviewed schizophrenics, under their docs supervision.  My understanding is that they go through 'manic' phases, where they do clearly reprehensible stuff, but sometimes have absolutely zero recollection of it afterwards.  Its kinda hard to believe. but more than one shrink told me that can be the case.  I don't think anybody could really make a diagnosis from watching this video.  That being said, the few schizos I met clearly had something wrong with them, even when they were on their meds and relatively lucid.  Which is, of course, a large part of the problem.  Generally, they don't like their meds and almost always quit taking them.

Saw this earlier.  The part with his brother is pretty intense, it appears at that point reality sets in for him.  Here is the full portion of that video:

Sad all around.

Maby if he didn't have such easy access to guns, he may have commited a crime that didn't result in any deaths, maby a few injuries. He would go to jail and get the help he needs. People like this will always exist, so preventative steps are needed rather than reactionary steps.

layla_wilson Saddest is that if just ONE adult did their job regarding this psychopath over the YEARS he exhibited these clear indicators, he'd have gotten the help he asked for and he never would have been allowed to buy a single firearm.

melcervini   What help?  There is very little mental help health out there. The programs were gutted by Reagan and never funded since. Any politician with that on the agenda is said to be soft on crime by his opponents.   The US likes punishment, not prevention.

melcervini   I didn't say there was none, I said very little. I bet all those programs are underfunded.

Gerry1of1  Funding is moot in this case.  If there was enough funding to take care of ONE person whom dozens of adults knew was a problem and a potential bigger problem AND who'd asked for help prior, he'd have been put in a hospital and 17 people would still be alive.  (Plus he had 800K... funding is again moot)

Its not the NRA's fault, its not Reagan's fault, or the following 5 presidencies that let those cut funds remain cut... its the shooter's and the adults that failed their own people.  The FBI were given TWO tips and they did nothing, school officials did nothing, state officials did nothing, and local officials did nothing, and they knew this person was a problem.

In 2016 when he started cutting himself after his girlfriend broke up with him, that alone should have had him committed via the Baker Act (which would have shown up on a firearms background check) and he'd have been denied the gun sale.

=prevention.

melcervini No one cares until AFTER a tragedy.  No one ever asks these questions until people are dead.

There are probably 1000s kids in the US right now in his same mental state and god knows how many have access to fire arms.

And no one will ask about any of their mental states UNTIL AFTER they start killing.

For the last 12 years, I have dealt extensively with the mental health care system for youths in michigan and it is a complete crock of shit.

Kid has an episode of some sort, they put him in a facility for a week or two, then cut him loose until the next episode.

I think even if you put that kid in to a mental health program, he still does this shooting UNLESS you get that weapon away from him and keep him from accessing more.

daegog If the laws and proper protocols were followed he would not have had access.  = getting the weapon away from him and keeping him from accessing more.
