Where Did Your Handle Come From?

Submitted by: skypirate 8 months ago in Lifestyle Misc

Fairly basic question but I've always wondered...

Is there really not another gerry?

When will fancylad become a fancy man?

Do squilz always last for ever?

If you're a normal freak 2 what the heck is a normal freak 1?

Let's get to know each other a little bit better. If you're an anonymous lurker, register with a clever name.

I found this site about 12 years ago and I was playing crimson skies on the original xbox at the time and they called them self's skypirates so I ran with it.

Here's some inspirational music:

My, my. Origin story time.

My brother gave me nickname.  All my family uses it; Dad used to upgrade it to Punkus Domesticus (the domesticated house Punko) at times.

I never questioned my brother when he gave it to me - at the time I was only in grade 6 and he was 6' 2" and nicknamed Moose.

My username came from my aol user name at the time, which for the life of me, cannot remember the password for anymore. Where I got the name for aol in the first place, my high school's mascot was the Panthers, and decided to shorten it to panth and add a couple of random numbers to it. I find it funny looking back and remember how much I hated high school when I was there and still chose a username based on the mascot, but I was also lazy when it came to usernames at the time.

So there you go.

Because I've been lurking on this site off and on for somewhere between 10 and 15 years, ever since a friend got bored and told everyone of her journey.

Okay, late to the game.

My handle came from the Old English epic poem Beowulf (of course). I've always been a fan of the poem and have read several variations (including an attempt in the original Old English).

And, also from the novel Grendel by John Gardner, which is Beowulf from the viewpoint of Grendel. Who is a very misunderstood creature.

Now, thanks to that really crappy Beowulf movie that came out in 2007, Grendel has become more popular as a handle, so I had to adapt.

For IAB, I just added 'Me'.  For other sites I pick another term from a line from the poem, "Grendel this monster was call. A Grim Spirit. Keeper of the fen and fastness."

As for my avatar. I originally had an appropriate etching of Grendel, but someone pointed out that was too trollish...So why not just use my photoshopping skills and create a cigar-smoking otter?  (By the way, I really disappointed that after all these years no one has noticed the boobs in the cigar smoke...)

My name is really Mark but my name was too common for a writing name so I used Markus. For IAB, Markus was taken so I tried it with part of my last name: MarkusT. That was also taken. So I added 123 but forgot to capitalize the T so people call me Markust on here which drives me kind of crazy. My avatar is my favorite picture of me but I really used it because I was sick of people saying only one side could be patriotic. That's ridiculously partisan. Funny thing is the picture I took of my friend in the same pose is her favorite picture of herself also, so I guess lots of drinks, plus a flag on a lake, on the 4th of July equals good picture.

Great post. My handle is a combination of John Q. Public and basket of deplorables. The Avatar is a silhouette of the artwork "The Son of Man," that I felt portrayed a "man on the street" image. I was compelled to register by the debates triggered by the 2016 election. I have a non-inflammatory, every-day-conservative viewpoint that I felt compelled to share.

Long time lurker, seldom poster (obviously)
Hard to explain, but it is based on
1. ludd = lint in Swedish
2. A book called “The Tao of Pooh” (I’m afraid I liked the concept of the book more than the book itself)
3. My teddybear’s origin story (All of my stuffed animals had very complex backstories. I was a weird kid)

I used to be called kermitgreen, when I was on I am bored like, 13 years ago, but then I lost my account, or forgot my password or something, cant remember....
so I made a new account, emmettyville.
It's a play on words. I like horror, and I have a son called Emmett who shares my love of horror, so I combined the two. Hence, emmettyville.

I acquired  my nom de guerre of The Checkered Demon in my early teens. He is the famous character  created by the SF head comics artist, S. Clay Wilson. His motto is " It's a nice day for something." I was always up for or to something in my wayward youth which makes it even more ironic that I wound up in the military and law enforcement. When I joined here and was putting in my handle it only took the letters scheckydamon. I use schecky damone in tribute to the great comedian Schecky Green and the the actor Vic Damone.

I'm not here to be liked. I'm not a fluffy animal, a veteran of your foreign wars, a man of god.

I'm just here to tell it like it is, as seen by someone from across the sea.

And if that sucks the life out of your party, then so be it.

As one of the most well known members on IAB (just waiting for that moderator request email.. Any day now), I am sure most people have been wondering about my name for years. Well pull up a chair and get comfortable, I will regail one and all with the tale.

It all started when I was about 7 years old with a dos game called Deathtrack. It was an early first person a car racing game but the cars had weapons and tried to blow each other up. I mostly won by taking out every other car on the track. Well, this was the first game that instead of asking for my name, it asked for a callsign.

After trying out a few different callsigns, such as Killer and Bad Man, I settled on "Big Boss". It was the name of the main villain in a cartoon I was into.

I used Big Boss for awhile but got bored with it before too long. After that, I started using "Firehawk" as my callsign. I got it from the game Thexder 2. I ended up using Firehawk for years for anything that asked for a nickname or callsign.

After a few years, a thought started popping in my head - what is a Firehawk but just another name for a Phoenix. I started going back and forth using Firehawk and Phoenix interchangeably. Eventually I decided I should just pick one and stick to it. I decided to use the game Scorched Earth (a dos artillery game) to be the deciding factor. A 1v1 best of 5 rounds with me controlling both tanks. Phoenix ended up winning.

I used Phoenix for my first forays online. My very first email was hotmail with the name phoenix_109. But as you can imagine, Phoenix was a popular handle to use. I was forced to use variations such as Xineohp (Phoenix backwards). At one point even getting frustrated and naming myself Phoenix_Hunter and wanting to hunt down all the other false Phoenix's that were using MY name.

One day, an online friend of mine wanted me to sign up for LiveJournal or something like that. I was getting tired of being forced to keep using alternatives to Phoenix. She had suggested "Posis Das", an ancient sky god, kind of a precursor to Zeus. I liked it. And better yet, it's unique enough that I've had no trouble using it for the past 15 years.

I first used SemichiSam in 1961, when I was on one of the Semichi Islands. The avatar is a photo of me shaking hands with a dog named Boozer. Boozer was the only non-human who lined up for inspection with the troops. Everyone acted as though that was normal. (I'm pretty sure he was the only non-human in line.)

I've been lurking here for a long time, and almost registered a dozen times just to ask a few regulars how they could possibly sleep at night saying the things they do, but weirdly it was this post that made me finally sign up.

I played Wolfenstein : Enemy Territory for over a decade, and use popsicle as my player name. I seem to remember discovering how to change text colors and most likely stumbled on red, orange, and purple first. It has pretty much carried over into other online personas. It's also easy to find a stock picture of a popsicle to use as an avatar.

Squrlz, I wouldn't have dared register during your brief hiatus. I'm looking forward to being wagon-ed at any moment.

So, in tenth grade, my friends urged me to chase some ducks onto a frozen pond.
So, I did.

I tested the ice before running across the frozen pond. It was completely solid... except by the bridge, where I ran to. Fell through the ice up to my waste, didn't even touch the bottom because I spread myself across as much ice as I could as it was breaking underneath me.

My friends didn't see me because there was a knoll that I had to go over before, so when I emerged, my friends thought I had caught one (I didn't) and they thought it shat on me.

I spent the next 4 hours with cold, wet jeans. I couldn't change because I was at a district jazz festival.

When I first joined IAB about a decade ago, being a squirrel, I wanted to make some reference to my kind that users might appreciate. So with the squirrel lady in mind from the movie Rat Race (2001), I chose the username Squrlz4Sale.

It's a funny scene; give it a watch if you're unfamiliar with it or haven't seen it in awhile.

Several years later, I took a break from IAB for about a year and a half. When I returned, I knew I had to be Squrlz, but I'd tombstoned the Squrlz4Sale account so I needed something new. And thus was born Squrlz4Ever.

Great post, by the way, Skypirate.

Kalron son of Balron...an unfinished videogame lead character I created 18 years ago.  I actually have a fully functional home screen (think the cave screen from the original Legend of Zelda) complete with character animation, environment and "overworld" music.  I boot it up every once in a while to torture myself with all of the unfinished work I gave up in lieu of actual work that pays well over a decade ago now.

But that is what retirement is for...am I right?

jarred Uploading an avatar image isn't hard; takes no time at all really.

  1. Click on your username at the upper-right corner of the screen.
  2. Select Your Profile.
  3. Within the frame around your username and avatar area, click the pencil icon for Edit.
  4. Drag and drop an image from a location on your computer onto the spot for your avatar upload.
  5. If by bad luck, your avatar displays with a dark vertical band in the center, upload another image, or the same image at a difference resolution, using the same method.
Boom! You're done.

Cool idea for a post.

I first stumbled across this site with a religious post where people were arguing about whether god exists. So I made an account as Zeus, named HolyGod, and started jokingly asking people why they didn't believe in me.

Then I started clicking on other posts and got in Obama era economic debates with 5cats and Crakr.

Pretty soon I had 1,000 posts and people sorta knew me so it seemed weird to change my name. It's a little embarrassing, because while I am rather cocky I am not so cocky as to refer to myself as a god, and I'm sure that is what people assume.

This is the only place in the world I use that handle.

kalron27 I must admit I haven't read or listened to any Discworld stuff for ages. I'll have to get a few novels onto my Kindle.

I had recently re-read one of my favourite books.  I was either that or LordEmsworth.

I deleted my original facebook account due to privacey issues and identity theft problems.
I wanted to post to IAB so I made an account with a name that I am fond of. Bill watson.

I used a stock photo of some random dude on google.
He looks smart so that gives me the right to be complete smartass on all accounts.

monkwarrior Would love to know where you are in the world Monk. I have argued with you in the past a little and probably said a few things I shouldn't have....I am always impressed with how you keep your temper down.

rukittenme At one point he was in canada IIRC. I also believe he went by 747pilot and myguysmiley before those accounts were banned for whatever reason.

rukittenme I don't really release personal details on the internet.  Just enough for the most dedicated to find me. As for my 'temper' that's just a natural result of understanding deeply spiritual matters.

It's like the opposite of Buddhist enlightenment, then? You lose the last shred of your inner peace.

monkwarrior Every year for Christmas, my sister gives my parents a fruitcake made by the Trappist monks at Assumption Abbey. It's delicious. Do you make fruitcakes? If so, is it too early to put in my order for Christmas 2018?

I keed, I keed. Just a little squirrely humor for you there.

Are you under the impression you gave any new information? Are you able to answer the most straight forward of questions?

Is monking what you do for a living?

Long time lurker, seldom commenter.  Slobzs is a handle I use often on websites. It's an acronym from each person in my family. SL = Sylvia, O = Oscar,  B = Brian, Z =Zara, and S is from our last name.

slobzs A belated "Welcome to IAB" to you, Slobzs! I see you made your account several years ago, but are only now coming out of the shadows, similar to at least one other user in this thread. I hope you find your time socializing in the threads civil and, beyond that, lots of fun.

Regarding the dark stripe going down the middle of your avatar: Try uploading your avatar image again, either the same image or a new one. I forget what causes the difficulty, but once you get a good upload, you never have to worry about it again--and the images upload without that cursed stripe most of the time.

Best of luck and I look forward to seeing you in the threads!
