2 teachers gave themselves the toughest of restrictions: All their food had to cost no more than $1 per day per person.

The true test of this would be to give them one dollar and have them get food for that day. not spend like 90 dollars and have them eat 90 days on the food they bought.
And this is also easy when it`s just you. If you have a family this would be almost impossible.

I`d up it to two bucks a day, just so you could buy things to make up for the vitamins and nutrients that you aren`t getting. Then again, they sound like Vegetarians/Vegans, so they`ll already probably be taking vitamin pills to make up for the meat they`re missing. PB helps, but there are still things they won`t be getting in their diet.

I did this experiment. I got lucky though because I found a rice sale at OddLots... Rice really does fill you up. I also ate oatmeal but for lunch I usually had hotdogs for protien. It was nasty, but it worked. (I keept it up for just under a month)

It`s called a loaf of bread and a pack of bologna.

I did not read that article or whatever but if it had to do with school and kids and each kid gets 1.00 dollar-- I would take each of their dollars from them and buy something I wanted to eat (check my profile)

F*** rice and that crap! They would`nt even get that junk because I`d be full and asleep like a bug in a rug (hair) in the corner, full from what I ate while they cried for their mamas who probably already died in the famine or what ever.

Did you look at what they ate for a month? Oatmeal for breakfast, peanut butter for lunch, rice and beans at dinner. Good way to get a nutritional deficiency.

I remember when Ramen was 10 cents here. Now it`s like 16 or 18 cents.

"I`d rather buy the taco bell nacho`s for .79 instead of a bag of rice or beans. Who wants to eat beans and rice all day?"
That`s pretty much the thinking that causes the problems they were discussing, if you think about it.
If you broke down those nachos and made them from scratch, like everything they are making in the experiment, they probably cost 20 cents to make. That means you would rather spend nearly 4 times as much as you need to just because you don`t want to deal with icky stuff like actually making food or eating rice and beans.
That`s sad.

If I partook in this experiment, I would constantly be trying the samples at Costco. There would oddly be less squirrels and pigeons loitering around my abode.

Grass is free, so are roses when they are in bloom, you could eat those. Or bugs or something, look I can`t solve your problems, what do you want from me?

Best food for calories and protein--tuna, milk, eggs, bread, yogurt, rice, beans, peanut butter.

I`ve been living off a $3 a day budget for the entire summer. Interview me?

The most interesting part of this was the ad at the top of this page. Bird nests for consumption? WTF?

Yeah the dollar menu. You could afford one item for the entire day. Choose wisely.

It`s called the dollar menu, it shouldn`t be that hard.

Buy in bulk. Rice, cans of tuna, dehydrated vegetables, etc. Oh, btw....ramen is expensive comparatively.

If you only have a dollar a day for food, then you shouldn`t really worry so much about eating healthy for the time being.

`YA HEAR THAT FAT PEOPLE?! EAT SOME FREAKING RAMEN.`

The Ramen Noodles at my grocery store is 400 calories per pack, with over a gram of sodium and around 20 grams of fat. Not so healthy there.

Good luck doing that in Canada. Fruits and Vegetables are about $1 each. Even Raman Noodles will set you back 50 cents a pack...

I think it`s a noble idea and a decent experiment, but I`m not so noble.

Lulz.

I actually lived on one meal a day Ramen noodles when my Dad got an hour cut at work. He worked like 28 hours a week and there`s 6 people in my family.

I lost plenty of weight, I used to be a chubby mutha before then.

YA HEAR THAT FAT PEOPLE?! EAT SOME FREAKING RAMEN.

The only way this would work is if you ate only non-perishable things, seeing as how they were buying in bulk and mathematically figuring to one dollar. Fruits and such would go bad way too fast, so really, you`d be awfully sick if you kept this up. Although I suppose you could freeze and preserve fruits and dry meat into jerky.

It can be done, but dumpster diving gets old. I found a great option is raiding local peoples gardens (retirement communities, community gardens etc).Risky at times but totally free, just don`t be greedy. This helped me survive one rough summer. Some local bakeries give away or have much cheaper day old breads as well.
And Lolcats
Not saving money in the first place is what got us into this economic fiasco, But I guess its different when mommy makes the food magically appear.

I can`t wrap my mind around this.

See in my house no one cooks, and I`m not allowed to play with those oveny thingys.

So for Food/Gas/Bowling (I bowl around 15 games a week....its training so I consider it an investment), I get 20 bucks a day. And often that isn`t enough....now food for under a buck? Any value meal would be 5 days worth of food

I heard about these two a few months ago.

It`s a really great idea. In many places of the world, it`s very expensive to buy food. You just have to be smart about it, which these two were.

Sure you can eat for under a buck a day, as long as you consider dirt food.

misleading title, it doesn`t outline how to eat on 1 dollar a day, but how a couple a of schoolteachers got the idea to and peoples reactions.

In the Navy Im getting paid 3.50 to eat everyday but it only costs 3.00 to eat in the Galley, so I make $15.00 a moth to eat. BEAT THAT TEACHERS!
