How Has Sunny Improved I-A-B Today?

After I-A-B's relaunch earlier this week (historians note: December 12, 2016), I posted this article that asked you to give us your feedback as well as any features you'd like to see. Then Sunny came up with a great idea -- a living post that lets you know what new features we've released, what we've fixed, and what features are on deck. Full transparency!

Now, if you ever wonder what Sunny did to improve the site (or what tickets he's about to tackle), swing by this page. Also, you should know that he does releases on tiny fixes 24/7 -- minor tweaks that you wouldn't be interested in -- this page won't bother you with those things (like tweaks to the CMS which makes my life easier). He'll just let you in on the good stuff -- the bells and whistles, if you will.

Also, feel free to give feedback, suggestions, and props to Sunny at the bottom of the page -- we're open to anything that improves the site, and if you're reading this, thanks for caring about the small details.

xoxo, Fancy

PS: I wish I could give you all access to the CMS -- it's a fucking work of art.

FIXED

KEY
[F]: Features
[B]: Bug fixes

January 2, 2017
  • [F] Back & Next Arrows
An old feature we didn't realize how many people used. Don't worry, it's coming back.

DECEMBER 26, 2016
  • [F] You Got Notifications!
Now, when people reply to your comment, you'll know about it because you'll get a notification. I've wanted this feature for years

DECEMBER 20, 2016
  • [F] Linked @Usernames
Now when you hit reply, @username is automatically added to response and linked to the user's profile. If you want to mention any other users, do @username and they will be linked as well.
  • [F] Sorting of comments
Now you can sort the comments the way you want it.  Soon, a lot of this will make it into your profile settings so it can be saved for you.

DECEMBER 16, 2016
  • [F] Operation: Back in Black: When you are logged in, you will see an eye on the top left.  Click on it and you are in the dark world!
This feature will give you the option to toggle back and forth, from the crunchy new white layout you see now (so your boss won't catch on when you're reading at the office) to the OG all-black layout (ideal for nighttime reading in bed with the lights off). This one is a big undertaking.

    DECEMBER 15, 2016
  • [F] Favorites Button
This is an old feature we used to use, which has been brought back because people have asked an ability to save articles to read later. Look for the little heart to the right of the social buttons on the article pages.

DECEMBER 12, 2016
  • [F] Submit Content Button
Allow users to submit articles to the site. We held off on this one for the day of the relaunch until the dust settled.
  • [B] Firefox Comments Broken
FF/IE users weren't able to comment on the site. Now they can.

PENDING REQUESTS

These are the fixes and features you guys requested. They're not listed in order, they're listed for tracking purposes. Some might take longer than others due to the depth of each task.

Hey Sonny,  I found a bug.  The upvote / down vote buttons do not work in Edge.

Can you add a formatting option to use Comic Sans (or something else) for a sarcasm font?

Hey Sunny,  Is there a feature in the works to block another user?  If not, can you add it?

Haven't seen you in a while Sunny, what updates and whatever have you've been working on the site?

panth753 most of the changes i have made are unnoticeable to users.  For example, tweaks to how we handle 404s, traffic spikes at times, block people who try to spam the site etc etc.

sunny Hey, man, thanks for checking.  Yes, it's still farked up.
Comments to the main thread sort properly: oldest > newest / top > bottom.  But comments to comments sort upside down, ie., newest > oldest / top > bottom.  I've seen other users, who use "oldest", comment about this before too, so it's not just me, fwiw.  Also, the sort is the same in Chrome, Mozilla, and <gag> Internet Exploder, if that info is of any use.

So in the example below (sorry it's Pentapuss, haha) the replies to Pentapuss are backwards.  Daegog (2 hours old) should be before skeeter (1 hour old).  When there's a lot of replies to replies to replies, it gets really confusing, and difficult to scroll up, down, up, down, up, down.

If there's anything I can do to help sort this out, don't hesitate.

And btw, glad you're still with us!  Just noticed your comment to Squrlz.

irk I think you're right. Haven't heard from Sunny in some time. I'm hoping Fancy is keeping him in the Rolodex and is planning to hire him on an ad-hoc basis from time-to-time.

I think the GIF below is working. Lemme know if it isn't working for you. Thanks. (Miss you, Sunny!)

squrlz4ever Nope.  A .gif off my hard drive doesn't work. It looks like yours is hosted but I can't find a way to even make that work.  What's the secret?

Hey, Sunny, just a couple things whenever you have time:
1) .gifs don't work in comments (could've sworn they did at one point, but not now)
2) Sort order for replies to comments is upside down if you have "oldest" selected. ie. the replies still run from newest to oldest, top to bottom.

Great work on the site!

When clicking a link from the notifications page, I get a 404 error.  Comparison of the URL generated from the notifications page and the actual page show "user/[username]/" added to the URL causing it to fail.

Example:
http://www.i-am-bored.com/user/insaneai/2017/01/guns-dont-kill-people-toddlers-do
(produces 404 error)

Working URL: http://www.i-am-bored.com/2017/01/guns-dont-kill-people-toddlers-do

panth753 Yep! OK well I'll look into doing this. Or. How to do this?  I don't know if Fancy would want to make a post about it but it would be nice.

FancyLad - I love Fundly. They take the least percentage out, the least amount of time to transfer the funds to the recipient, and there's no "if you don't make the cap you don't get the cash."

I'm seeing problems with trying to use my browser's "back" button after viewing a picture compilation post. After viewing the pictures, if I use "back" to go back to the main IAB page, nothing happens. Is this a coding issue, or an issue with my browser? Firefox 50.0.2 on Windows 7 Enterprise SP1.

Sunny, am I nuts (no pun intended) or did you tighten up the letterspacing in the headlines? A few days ago I was noticing that the letterspacing was loose and was thinking it was a characteristic of whatever font is being used. But now the heads look tighter--and 100% better. Please tell me I'm not crazy.

ON EDIT: Okay, I think I've figured out what's going on. I switched over to the white-on-black theme a few days ago and that's what's made the difference. With white-on-black, the letterspacing of the heads looks tight; with black-on-white, it looks too loose. Try it; you'll see what I mean. It's kind of like a magic trick. Whew, I'm not nuts. Well, maybe I am--just not with regards to this topic.  :)

Here's a request/suggestion that I was thinking of emailing, but I'll just leave it here instead. Fancy, you need to pony up and pay for two pieces of vector art for the I-A-B logo: one with the words beneath the bored face and one with the words beside the bored face. Sunny's got the website rocking now and the low-resolution logo has become something of an eyesore.

Also: It looks to me like you and Sunny need to settle on the exact RGB values for the I-A-B palette. To my eye, it looks like the colors are sometimes inconsistent. For example, the main logo and the Submit Post buttons are more baby blue than lavender and they look off. The exact RGB values for at least three colors need to be specified and enforced sitewide: (1) The charcoal gray used for the Back-in-Black background; (2) the light lavender used on the charcoal background; (3) the dark lavender used with a white background. At least three other complementary colors should also be defined to make a full palette. You or Sunny can get some ideas using any of the free online palette generation websites. Lemme know if you need more info. Once the full palette is defined, you'll then need to come up with rules as to what each color is used for. (Chances are you two are already aware of all this; if so, forgive me for stating what you already know.)

Thanks. Don't hate me because I'm a bit of a detail freak: I love I-A-B and love the new design, which is why I'm so engaged (or obsessed... take your pick).  :)

@Sunny No!? Seriously? You mean the blurriness around "i am bored" is ... by design? If I'm understanding you correctly, and that's the case, IAB is in desperate need of a degreed Graphics Designer. No offense intended: you're a programmer, and do a damned good job of it. And the rest of the players are editors and business people. No one's dropped the ball. It's just that this is the screwiest thing I've ever heard. The lack of vector art for the logo doesn't look cool or edgy. It looks like someone didn't want to pay for vector art.
