I really like the 'Teach guys not to rape', line.

Let's try that with other things.
Teach people to not murder, assualt, burgler or speed.
Teach Catholic Priest to not mess with little boys.
Teach Liberals not to redistribute any wealth that they did not earn.
Teach black guys how to wear pants.
Teach white guys to dance.
Teach British about oral hygiene.
Teach Rednecks to not date cousins.
Teach girls to not friendzone.
Teach girls to not b!t@h.

@MeGrendel,
100% correct! Including that the so-called "rape culture" doesn't exist. I think it just seems that way to them because ANY sex looks like rape compared to the Frigidity Culture that these incredible morons are trying to impose.

SmagBoy1-were saying that idea that a woman should have to (in other words, that the responsibility is on her, the victim, to prevent the crime) is offensive as an idea

Here's a clue. There's 'bad people' out there that will hurt, rape and/or kill you (and all three apply for both men and women). EVERYONE should have a means of self-defense.

The entire 'teach men not to rape' is pure bull. You can't teach a criminal to do, or not do, anything. But because they're 'women' and it's all about a 'rape culture' (that does not exist), they are supposed to get a free pass from the every day dangers of life?

It's always a positive to do all you can to keep yourself from being a victim. I can't depend on 'just teach muggers not to mug'.

@Listypoos,
"I can't help but feel that if this statement about teaching women to defend themselves had been made by a rape victim who'd just opened up her own business teaching defence skills to women wanting them then there wouldn't be the same amount of vitriol as now just because it's a miss USA that has said it."
That's a brilliant point. I'm sure you're correct. As I commented, it looks like a truly concerted effort to be offended, and probably because it's a Miss USA who said it, as you suggested.

Also, I can't help but feel that if this statement about teaching women to defend themselves had been made by a rape victim who'd just opened up her own business teaching defence skills to women wanting them then there wouldn't be the same amount of vitriol as now just because it's a miss USA that has said it.

A lot of feminists really don't like these beauty pageants (I don't either btw) and think that entrants are letting the rest of the females down by perpetuating the idea that 'women are there to look pretty and parade for men'.

I think some of the attacks on what this woman has said are more because of who has said it rather than just what has been said.

cont.

These are all types of warnings we give to our kids to help reduce risk. Why be all up in arms at the suggestion of another way to reduce a risk? That's not blaming a victim if anything does sadly happen.

We all know victims are chosen at some point...some you can't mitigate that well against, like a stalker who works with them isn't going to be put off that much, but an attacker looking out for a victim late at night is going to choose based on how easy a target looks. As bad as it sounds I care more about my loved ones than I do about some stranger's daughters - If an attacker is going to strike then I don't want them striking at mine - obviously preferably no one at all, but that's in an ideal world. Till the education method starts working better I'm all for teaching my daughter how to defend herself, the two ways of looking at it are not mutually exclusive.

Whilst obviously I'd rather my daughter was never in a position to use her martial arts skills, given a choice of either being raped or having an attempted rape and fighting her attacker off I know which one I'd prefer.

Whether we like it or not there are risks from all sorts of crimes that we do our best to mitigate all the time. If for instance I'm walking home late at night and see a group of guys in the street ahead being lairy, smashing bottles and obviously looking for trouble then I'd be a drating idiot for continuing on a path that would pass them when I could eliminate any risk at all by choosing a different route. That wouldn't mean that I'm to blame if I did go there and get attacked, but why would you not try and mitigate a risk when you could?

Have these women never said to their child for instance, 'don't go to such a place after dark on your own. make sure you get a licenced cab from a taxi rank not one who just happens to stop by you'

Why is it not even a question that home owners should be allowed to carry firearms to fend off burglars and such, and why is it causing a sh*tstorm when you advice women to defend themselves against assault of any kind. Would the outrage be any less if the question was about what to do to prevent being robbed?

Humans are part of the animal kingdom. We are animals. As such there will be conflict, sometimes physical. Speak softly and carry a big stick.

Sadly there is a belief that if a woman did not 'fight back' then she wasn't raped. this view is prevalent- and I am willing to bet that more that a few commentators have come across this. it's not the idea of self defence that the woman object to- but the notion that it is a womans duty to defend herself- and that she should be blamed if she doesn't.

SmagMan - why are you defending them? Your spin is total babble. Telling people to protect themselves from ANY crime that can happen is not victim blaming, it's empowering them against Evil - which is still a thing (yes, in 2014 even).

WTF has happened to the world. There is literally no drawback to women learning self-defense. The only people who would complain about it are the true propagators of the victimhood culture.

Stop being offended and start empowering yourself. Anyone who has a problem needs to look in the mirror.

@piratefish Seriously? This is their argument?

Yes, sadly it is. These are the exact same f***tards who think you can be safe from gun violence by disarming yourself and putting up a sign declaring someplace to be a gun-free zone, as if that has ever worked.

This kind of stupid doesn't just hurt; it kills.

Are these the same people that called the Miss America winner "Miss Al Qaeda" for being of Indian descent?

I'm offended that I might have to defend myself and should probably learn how; just in case.

Really? That's what is pissing these ignorant fools off?

That's like being pissed off that I have to buy locks for my doors because some ass clowns like to steal. Why should the onus be on me? They're the bad guys.

Seriously? This is their argument?

Actually, one of the quoted comments made sense: "...women shouldn't need to take self defense classes to protect themselves from rape."
Truly, no one should HAVE to take self defense classes to protect themselves from ANY type of assault. There's nothing wrong, however, with people learning to defend themselves, or suggesting that someone may want to. This sounds like a really concerted effort to be offended. As such, I'd say that this particular group of self-proclaimed feminists mostly deserves to be ignored.

she clearly isn't supporting rape culture or anything of that sort...she may just be acknowledging the fact that rapes happen, sadly, and most men don't give enough of a poo to stand up against it, thus leaving her with the idea that beating a mans ass is the best way to handle it.

if that pissed you off, you should think long and hard about why it did.

@SmagBoy1: Nice try to "spin it away" but the fact is that accusing HER of supporting rape is hardly non-offensive.
They say puking and peeing is better than "self defense" and NO OTHER OPTION is even open for discussion.

So while NOW Feminists live in their fantasy world, real American Women are buying handguns in record numbers. Look for rape rates to drop across the USA!

Teach burglars not to burgle. I should not have to lock my doors
