Could we detect an exact area of a meteor hit? I don't think we could. I'd assume it would be evacuate an entire state/section of a country.

OK. I *KNOW* space is vast but for a sense of true urgency can we agree that, in the future, it is only "Close" when it is inside the moon's orbit and it is only a "Near Miss" when it is inside the orbit of our geosynchronous satellites.

Anything more reactionary is akin to crying "Wolf" and will soon become ignored when it should not.

If I was Dr Evil, I'd find a way to hang a solar sail on it and hold the world to ransom.

@drawman61: It's not coming very close, and they can pin-point it's trajectory soon after discovery, eh?

It's big, but not BIG! It would wipe out a whole city if it hit one though. There would have been time to evacuate had that been the case.

Anyhow, I think it's cool! Woosh! Missed me by 'that much'! (Maxwell Smart voice)

do you REALLY think anyone 'in the know' would let the rest of the planet know if there WERE a 'killah" incoming? doubt it... and honestly, I don't think I'd WANT to know.

I think it would depend on the size and composition of the potential impactor and point of impact.

For something this size, I think they would because the damage can be mitigated by evacuation. You might lose a town, maybe even a city, but that would be better than losing the town or city and all the inhabitants.

But for a really harmful one, probably not.

Once again, recently detected, yet we are told not to worry by the bods.

So...are you lobbying to have far more public money granted to NASA so they can greatly expand their search?

Have you looking into the available information on the frequency of more than trivial impacts, so you can judge for yourself how much you should be worrying?

Hey, you know what else happened today? A guy shot his rifle at a deer up country somewhere, and it didn't hit me!
