Is it impossible for a democracy to be a republic?

@Gerry1of1

I must disagree, the USA is filled with MEs and YOUs, and not much US. That is the problem. Whether you're a "can do" or a "gimme" kinda guy, real success/happiness is a team sport, and this generation has forgotten that.

Do not feel bad for me Gerry, I am white, male, and un-poor. I have reasonable self-awareness (I guess), take inventory regularly, and enjoy a deliberate life. I mean, poo, just having the first two of these gives me an insane advantage!

I feel bad for the folks who are fooled on a regular basis. Some still believe the Earth is flat, and crop circles are made by aliens. Such poor methods of thought must surely negatively inform future action.

Is it impossible for a democracy to be a republic?

Yes. You are either governed by the rule of the mob, or you are governed by the rule of law. You can't have it both ways.

Democracy is 2 wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.

Representative democracy is 51 wolves and 49 sheep electing a lunch committee.

Gerry, I love you and your ornery self, but, just to be clear, people have been talking "the decline of our country" and "how much better things *used* to be" for thousands of years.

This quote is attributed to Socrates, "Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers."

And even it was an invention of , Kenneth John Freeman, for his Cambridge dissertation published in 1907, it's still well over 100 years old. We're a great, amazing, wonderful country and our "problems" are no different (not really) than any that there've ever been in any generation.

Hope the beer was good.

it seems like the guy who made the picture remembered her name, or did he spell it wrong?

Ollie, for all the talk of democracy it's easy to forget we don't live in one. We live in a Republic.

Gerry, we USED to be a republic; we were founded as a republic, but we have long since degenerated into a democracy.

We used to be ruled by the law; now we are ruled by the mob. The constitution can now be overturned by 51% of the people electing someone who freely admits he has absolutely no respect for it (in his words, "a charter of negative liberties") and has told us in no uncertain terms that he has absolutely no intention of following it ("I have a pen...")

I don't see any way out of this $#!+hole we've gotten ourselves into short of a violent revolution.

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

My only regret is they drag me own with them.

Gerry, in a democracy, we all get the government that the majority deserves.

This country was so much better before it became a democracy.

The reason why no one got excited when Amber Lyon quit was because by that time, everyone was already well aware that CNN is biased and dishonest. I guess it was somewhat surprising, though, that someone with a smidgen of integrity and intellectual honesty was still working there by then.

@ BuckeyeJoe, you seem like an honest, heartfelt, intelligent guy...that's why I feel bad for you. There is no room for YOU in the USA. I'm a patriot and I've watched USA decline from the "Can Do" generation to the "GIMMIE" generation.

BuckeyeJoe, you seem caught in the middle... must suck for you.

@Gerry1of1

I like it here on IAB. Think I'll stay a while. You're my fav, prolly cause everything you say is just so damn gay.

Have to agree with just about everything you said, except the deserving part. Americans are RAISED this way, by and large, to surrender our freedoms, and bicker about meaningless trifles all the while. We deserve better.

And the rest don't drag you anywhere, son. We're all responsible for our own situation. 100%. Mano-a-mano, sharpest knife on the tree, and other such mixing of metaphors. How's that beer.

And? Your point is?
Of course our "news" lies to us. .... DUH!

Soon the internet will be blocked so we can't get real news from abroad.

This is all obvious but Americans don't deserve liberty because they are too complacent, too spoiled, too complacent to protect their own freedoms. A slave mentality deserves slavery.

My only regret is they drag me own with them.

Tekinette - that is not why. The reason no one is talking about her anymore is because it was 2 years ago. The Liz Wahl thing just happened.
And it was always about CNN International.

Everyone is talking about the hot brunette and no one is talking about the bitter blonde. I don't know if news has anything to do with it.

She made an hour long documentary for CNN exposing Bahrain and its corrupt government, CNN aired it...

But she wanted it to be aired on CNN International (which is a separate organization) aswell and when they didn't she claims it's because of financial connections between CNN International and the Bahrain.

Gotta love how it was turned into propaganda about CNN (and not CNN International) being bought by the US Government (and not the Bahrain). That's why nobody is talking about her anymore btw.

I challenge all of the nutso political posters on here (and that description includes me) to take a break for awhile for the super partisan link suggestions. Just to see what happens. I quit submitting hyper partisan stuff a couple of months back (at least *tried* to, one about Gibson guitar production was apparently more political than I knew) and I've been a much happier chap and I think I've been less of a dick here, too! Just a thought/friendly suggestion for your own peace of mind and blood pressure. Take it or leave it.
