I'm with Emmettvville. We should be killing more third world people in order to save them from starving later.

Oh Bill Nye! He's a pale shadow of his former self.
Now he hops on any bandwagon for his 15 seconds on TV...

Fact: UN food aid is counter-productive after 2 months. Their own research shows this. Gangs (or the Government) steal much of the food and sell in on the 'black market'. This drives food prices down, destroying the local production. That, of course, causes MORE starvation!
If the aid actually reaches those in need? That's terrific!
But there's an entire economy based on stolen food aid. It feeds Warlords, gangs, corrupt officials and NOT those in need.

What can WE do about the horrible governments in hell-holes? Not a darn thing.

Surprisingly I agree with Gerry 100 percent. Well said, sad as it may be.

WTF is wrong with some of the commenters here?

They know how to see through bulls**t. Sorry it doesn't fit into your hate of everything US. Now tell US how much your beloved China gives to help other places.

This subject is far too complex to debate on here.

We sent aide in the form of money. They spent it on weapons.
We sent aide in the form of food. They sold it and bought weapons with the money.
We sent aide and people to distribute the food to the poor. As soon as our people moved out they sent troops in to take the food, sell it and buy weapons.

As much as it would be nice to help the starving masses in Africa, the warlords in charge will not allow that.

Since when does foreign aid mean money? Ya at the beginning he show's how 'little' you are spending but aid doesn't have to be money being sent to corrupt governments. It can be supplies and education being sent directly to the people who need it.

He is a dim wit. We can't make dysfunctional societies better by throwing money at them. Almost all of it goes to line the pockets of the local elites. Almost all foreign aid is a waste or actually makes things worse.

"...more people to starve in poverty later."
"...debate about whether or not foreign aid is inherently good, especially in corrupt and unstable countries..."
There is more than enough. The problem is not quantity.
It's distribution.

My own perception is that distribution or refusal are due to political issues near the receiving end.

He needs to stick to hard science.
I blame his Dancing With The Stars gig.
It gave him a taste of fame and now he's addicted.

'Mearly' 0.8% of 3.8 Trillion dollars is still $30.4 billion (with a 'B'). Hardly chump-change.

Plus Americans voluntarily contribute more than ten times that amount to charity every year (a significant portion of which goes overseas).

So, excuse us if an attempt to make the country look 'stingy' fails miserably.

what a f ucking dingdong. More people saved from death in 3rd world countries = more people to starve in poverty later.

The US government only spends the small amount he's talking about. The US people, on the other hand, personally give more to foreign countries than the rest of the world combined. I'm not saying we shouldn't give more through the federal government than we do now, but this statistic, this "fact," is misleading in it's use as a guilt trip if you don't realize that maybe our federal government gives less per capita because we are already giving through personal charities more than what the rest of the world can come up with.

I've never heard of any of these myths... where do they come from?

I don't know anyone who actually believes any of those "myths". But if you really want a video dispelling a myth here.

I actually have spoken with Jeffrey Sachs and other idealists like Stiglitz when I was at Columbia University. There is heavy academic debate about whether or not foreign aid is inherently good, especially in corrupt and unstable countries.

I highly recommend everyone read this book. It's really the most honest and serious look at foreign aid and the man behind foreign aid that I've ever seen. All of Jeffrey Sachs' villages failed.

It turns out Africans don't think like white PhD elitists.
