I had a wireless remote that worked with a tiny speaker that made very high pitched noises. The TV was equipped with a microphone as a receiver. It was a Philips K9 chassis model in the early eighties (it was second hand).

I discovered that when I clapped my hands, the TV changed channels, and when I rattled my keys the volume went up...

For some reason I'm reminded of the remote control war with the neighbours in Poltergeist.

Imagine if someone who was awed by this TV were to suddenly find themselves in a typical Walmart electronics department today?

Can't believe I found this. This is the remote I described below.

Couldn't they have gotten a narrator with a better voice than that Cagney clone?

Hours of pure pleasure!

I had a big TV with a "Space Commander ' remote control:

Not electronic! Worked with ultrasonic frequency

My parents always had remotes. They hollered at one of the kids to get up and change the channel or volume for them.

Garage door opener worked the same way. As did the automatic dishwasher.

I can't imagine a remote more primitive than the first one my family had. It was a big hunk of clay-colored plastic with two black bars sticking out of it. You pressed one for on/off, the other for channels (no volume control). There was a metal grill at one end. Whenever you pressed down on one of the black bars, you would hear a loud puff of air blowing through the grill. It's like the thing was operated by a little bellows. Sorry now that I didn't keep it.
