Why isn't there a large international out cry from other countries?
Because the US isn't breaking international law. Period. The place is a hardly a secret death camp.

Holding people indefinitely without proper trials just makes us no better than any country we hate...
You are neglecting two small details. According to the Geneva Conventions, 1) prisoners of war may be held for the duration of hostilities, and 2) it is a WAR CRIME to put prisoners of war on trial.
We have afforded this barbarian filth POW status even though all they deserve is hanging. Having done that, though, we are now bound by the rules of war, even though they are not.
As far as the cost of operation goes, put me in charge, and I'll do it for $20,000 per head per year, and turn a nice profit at that.
As to your other question: "Why should we expect North Korea or Iran to release our people when we won't do it, either," maybe it's because we haven't declared war against Iran and North Korea, whereas al Qaeda HAS declared war against us. That should make SOME difference, don't you think?

"Guantanamo is still open because it's by far the BEST possible place to put them. "
No it's not. Two states offered to house them in new prisons they had just build at a fraction of the cost of Gitmo.
Obomba tried to close Gitmo, and failed. That is a failure of his leadership. If he'd had better diplomatic and leadership skill he'd have gotten it done. But then, if he had those skills we wouldn't be saddled with the idiotic idea that, since people can't afford healthcare, we'll pass a law requiring them to buy it. [shaking head]

I'm grateful for your teachings @lauriloo
@Draculya: The Geneva Convention clearly covers it:
Non-Uniformed Combatants can be executed on the spot. Period. Or you can "question" them and then execute them.
I've said it already but I'll say it again:
America knew they were facing an insurgent war in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Most, if not ALL of the enemy would be wearing civilian clothes.
The spectacle of US Soldiers executing these prisoners would be a propaganda NIGHTMARE! Something needed to be planned for what to do with them when captured.
If you take them to America? They are now "political prisoners" and also have recourse to American laws.
Rendition to "neutral nations" is temporary at best.
The solution of building a prison on NOT American territory was pure genius.

The whole point of overseas detention without trial is to skirt fundamental US laws. Think about that for a minute.

"She fails to mention how Democrats ALSO voted overwhelmingly to keep it open... to block the relocation of the prisoners onto American soil. Dems AND Repubs both! @lauriloo said so! "
Guess you missed when she said CONGRESS blocked it, not just Republicans. Making a special point to call out Democrats was not important to the story. On Fox News maybe, where everything is a democratic scandal, but not here.
Holding people indefinitely without proper trials just makes us no better than any country we hate that has Americans locked up for only a shred of accusation. Why should we expect North Korea or Iran to release our people when we won't do it, either.
But glad I taught you something regardless.

Guantanamo is still open because it's by far the BEST possible place to put them.
Obama's tactic of putting them on ships in international waters is even MORE Illegal, immoral and expensive than Gitmo.
She fails to mention how Democrats ALSO voted overwhelmingly to keep it open... to block the relocation of the prisoners onto American soil. Dems AND Repubs both! @lauriloo said so!
Sure: it's time to reduce and eventually close it. But it sure was NOT the case in 2009! Empty political promises are worthless at best, damaging at worst.
The US Constitution does NOT apply to the detainees. Nor does the Geneva Convention. Those are facts.
Yes Rachel: DUMB political decisions should be resisted! lolz!
