I agree with what @CreamK said. I have made sound effects for different media and have heard this when slowing different audio clips down (If I remember correctly, it was around 800x slower that this would happen.)

Extreme pitch shifts causes artifacts to appear. The more you shift, the more repetition has to occur. That repetition extends the harmonical elements in time causing everything to "sing". I can take a buzzsaw and get it to sound like that.... Using a different algorithm would cause a totally different "song". What you mostly hear is mathematics, which in itself is quite beautiful.

Sleepyhallow if you listen at about 59 seconds in, a narrator says there are two separate tracks on the audio. One is crickets at normal speed and one of the crickets slowed down. They overlapped the two tracks.

I'm still surprised that no-one has mentioned Buddy Holly.

If it is slowed down then how come you can still hear normal cricket chirps?

Somehow, that sick little personality quirk of yours doesn't surprise me, Ollie.

In fact, I bet you go out of your way to stomp on unsuspecting insects and other small animals.

Makes you feel important and powerful in your pathetic little life, I'm sure.

Nickel 2, PHAEDRA was Tangerine Dream's best album. Many hours spent listening to that one on the clunky old headphones.

To think that there's a wealth of beauty such as this which we cannot perceived through the human senses. It's tragic and beautiful. "I was to believe." - SmutleyButt

@patchouly What percent did you slow it down by? What resolution audio file did you use? Did you use high definition audio recording equipment? What mood were the crickets in when you recorded them?

This is rather a cheat- it is heavily manipulated with a choir put in.

'patchouly's cricket'. That sounds a bit like a hypothetical Schroedinger's cat.

First minute of this took me immediately to Tangerine Dream's 'Phaedra' Title track.

Izroth, the narrator specifically said there were two separate tracks on the audio -- one normal and one slowed down.

Interesting, Smutleybutt.

patchouly, couldn't the rhythmic structure change according to species, or because of external conditions like weather, time of day, etc. -- or depending on what kind of message or call is being transmitted?

Guess only an entomologist would know for certain.

I agree @Patchouly, you an hear separate crickets in the background, those would be slowed down as well, but you can hear them normal...someone has tooo much time on their hands!!!

patchouly what if his crickets are a different species of crickets than yours? What he slowed them down more than yours?

Here are peruvian crickets that sound very similar to his. Are yours peruvian crickets?

I want to believe.

This is so stupid. After hearing this, I took a cricket song and slowed it down. It sounds nothing like this. This version has clearly been manipulated quite a bit. Here is the one I did so you can hear what they actually sound like:

Beautiful. Sounds like a choir. The whales are going to have to get busy now.

Good one, captkava. Ligeti's music was the also first thing I thought of when I listened to this.

Great post. I-A-B at its best.
