my favorite example: a woman who worked with me and my ex tried to get both of us fired, just because. when she had to work thanksgiving weekend (we're security at an abandoned plant and quite literally do nothing all day), she spent all day saturday texting the regional manager about how much she hated working weekends, it wasn't fair, blah blah blah. she followed her rant by telling him something to the effect that if her demands (not to ever work weekends again) were not met that she would start looking for another job. he texted her back and accepted her 2 week notice. she was gone exactly 14 days later and banned from the property. we are all given instructions to call the sheriff if she ever shows up.

that was the best early xmas present i ever got.

now she works at the local wal-mart, overnights on weekends, the shifts she refused to work when she worked with us.

You get to know the difference. I've worked in grocery stores for most of my youth and I've seen a lot of different shop lifters. Homeboy below? Electric toothbrushes, $5 toothpaste? He's selling it for a quick buck, for sure. Blocks of cheese get sold to the back-doors of low end restaurants and face moisturizers and expensive age-defying eye creams get sold on ebay for half cost, which is still 100% profit from the nothing you paid...but when you watch a young girl get busted for eating a sandwich and trying to walk out and watch her junkie mom come and get her, or a senior pocket cat food and a mom hiding the meat products under her baby stroller, they're probably not selling it.

Now why that's an issue in first world countries like Canada and the US? That's a whole 'nother stadium of issues, but we spend so much time stricken with how genuinely terrible situations are in other areas of the world, we forget that there are starving people at home too.

@Rick_S Hmmm that's a really good point....I don't really believe in Karma, in sense that I think good things still happen to shi7ty people and shi7ty things happen to good people all the time...BUT when there is that instant gratification of getting to watch somebody who wronged you get smacked down by life what else do you really call it? Karma just encompasses it so nicely.

I watched a shop lifter once cut through my line, followed closely by one of our Loss Prevention Officers and he started to run when he got closer to the doors, figuring out that the LPO was following him I guess. As soon as his sneaker hit outside the door, his foot must have caught because he face-planted straight into cement. He had a whole bunch of Sensodyne and electric toothbrushes in his pants, lol off to sell them to blackmarket dentists.

@Rick_S: You did something terrible in a former life!
Now you're going to pay for it

Karma is just another aspect of the idea that "God did it". Some super-natural force that rewards good and punishes evil. It's a nice idea, but just another fantasy.

@robthelurker: People don't "steal bread" dude, they smash & grab whatever they want. Anything they can sell for $1. They don't do it out of "poverty" or desperation, they do it because:
1 It's easy.
2 They think they'll get away with it.

Now perhaps in a 3rd world hell-hole people steal because they're starving? But even there it's mostly armed gangs ruled by "WarLords" who are responsible for the bulk of the crimes.

I don't get Karma. Bad things happen to people how have done bad things to others, right? So if I have something bad happen to me, and then I see something bad happen to the other person, like in some of these posts, I get to say Karma's a Bitch and feel all good about myself.

But, and this is the part I don't get, if Karma is a Bitch, and I had something bad happen to me in the first place, wouldn't that mean that I did something bad to someone else, first? So, maybe, I really shouldn't be bragging about how Karma's gonna get that other person who did me wrong, because, you know, they were just Karma's messenger.

Perhaps instead of calling it an even trade, he accept that that guy was probably on the mend from some hardcore withdrawal and understand that a pack of cigarettes is more then likely chump change for him, but for the other guy it was more then everything he owned.

Perspective helps before you judge others. Give the poor man his stuff back.

im not too sure how i feel about the hitchhiker one. the dude had 18 cigarettes and he couldnt bum one to some hitchhiker? yeah, he had every right to decline the guy, but sometimes people need what they need. if some one refuses to give a beggar a piece of bread, but then the beggar steals a piece of bread when he is denied, can anyone really blame the starving beggar? yeah im comparing cigarettes to bread, shut up. im just saying the guy couldve done the nice thing and given the hitchhiker one cigarette, but instead the hitchhiker was left with no choice but to steal 18 cigarettes. although if you ask me if the hitchhiker was stupid enough to leave his backpack in the guys truck he got what was coming to him. i dont even smoke cigarettes. i just think i dont like the guy who wouldnt bum a cigarette to a hitchhiker. nobody hitchhikes anymore. im pretty sure he was homeless. a change of clothes and several small sentimental items can mean the world. shouldnt have left it in the truck.
