Gog.com is great just got Papers, Please from them and they threw in a bunch of free titles including The Witcher. With as big as games are getting I prefer them on a platform that can be patched. So I wait a few years for the AAAs to be modded and patched by their communities and play 'em on the pc. Random Indy titles and established companies that don't release buggy games are for the console. Sorry, bethesda, you will always have a place in my heart and on my pc. Though I am looking forward to not playing ESO for the first six months after release.

I prefer retro games on my computer

Just in case you don't know about it, I'll mention gog.com

Originally "good old games", they now sell an increasing number of new games (mostly indie, but the same company that owns gog.com also owns a game dev studio and sell their games through gog.com) but are still mainly about old games. They bundle them with an emulator and write a combined install, so you just have to install as usual and it'll run on modern OSes. Prices start from $6, but there are sales on most of the time and prices start from $2 in the sales.

They have a firm policy of no DRM of any kind, ever, so there's nothing to inconvenience legitimate customers. I've bought new games from them just because of that policy, games I haven't even played.

In fact, the only real argument I can think of against PC gaming is the lack of resale value on modern games. Most modern PC games can't be resold at all because they have one-shot activation and of course digital versions (which is the norm for PC games now, mainly Steam) can't be resold at all.

Well, that and the fact that games companies screw customers on digital pricing, but that won't be any different on consoles. They can quadruple their profits by selling at the same price, so they do.

In terms of cost, the difference isn't all that much. PCs have a higher hardware cost because they're not sold at a loss, but they have a lower normal game cost because they don't include a cut for the PC maker (console games include a cut for the console maker, which is why they can sell the consoles at no profit or even at a loss).

and still require a disk to be in the tray, even after trying to make a disk image, so why bother?

Use noCD cracks if you want to play games bought on disc without the disc.

Or just buy the game digitally if it really bothers you to change discs.

Can you play console games bought on disc without the disc?

PC's cost too goddamned much to keep up. I bought a $1700 laptop rig 2 years ago and I have issues playing games today.

Laptops are not intended for gaming and are rarely much good at it. In fact, games usually *explicitly* do not support laptops - you'll usually find something like "mobile versions of these chipsets are not supported".

So you've bought the wrong tool for the job and you're complaining that because it doesn't do the job well then neither does the right tool. That's a very flawed argument.

You could have bought a PC for a third of the price that would be better for gaming.

Most of the games I have need insane installs

Which will be far less than a PS4 install and not much more than a PS3 install.

What are your specs? Some things not right there.

I spent about $2200 for my Alienware rig, but I won't need a new PC for quite some time. Plus their service has been great; my video card wasn't always being detected (I was thinking loose connection) and they switched it out for a new one at no cost.

And there's this great thing called Steam which allows you to buy games and never need a cd, so maybe he should check that out, or a no-cd crack at least.

I bought a $800 laptop 4 years ago and it can still play the newest games with very little difficulty. I don't know what you're doing wrong, but just about every game I own and play, the CD has been in the case since I installed it.

Sounds to me that you're just making excuses.

Playstation as my family had everyone upto date, just what you're used to I like the controller better. PS4 i reckon is going to be the bigger seller they learnt from their mistakes they made for the ps3, where as Microsoft are now making those same mistakes with he new xbox. Though will wait until a couple of years when i have a bit more disposable income. Though I do like some of the exclusives xbox have had just never enough to buy the system

If you want to have a debate over which system is for serious gamers, the PC is king in that arena. If you are an idiot like LuckyDave, you obviously spend too much money at big box stores like Best Buy. They'll sell you bargain bin crap and make it sound like it's THE pooe when it is actually just plain old pooe. I bought the parts from several stores for ~$1800 to build a top of the line gaming desktop computer three years ago. It still screams. Just loaded the latest BF4 and still runs everything on high settings at 40+fps. Oh, and in case you have been living under a rock, most game companies stream their games. So, no, you don't need a CD/DVD in the drive. It's called Steam and Origin. Cloud gaming is the present.

I prefer retro games on my computer and current titles on the playstation. I've always just liked sony, the controller and the playstation start-up sound better. I remember as a teenager that it was a good thing that you and your friends had different consoles. You'd get this cool ass range of social gaming experiences. Now it's everyone's playing the same game but on different servers and they can't switch. Which is stupid.

Wii U FTW!

@turd, what exactly is a "non serious gamer"? As opposed to a serious gamer? Is Forza 5 "serious" while Zelda is "non serious"? Which one is that POS, Knack? LEGO: Marvel Super Hero's? Is that one serious or non-serious? I'm really not sure where this notion comes from. It's games. Wii U is non-serious? Does it need a couple of "angry eyes" pasted on the front of the console or something?

The Xbox has to many restrictions still, plus payed xbox live is just not necessary and is ultimately money making, yes PS got hacked and the details were compromised but they still didnt charge for the security to be enhanced, they actually gave freebies to customers. Good Guy Sony. The games will pretty much be the same, the consoles are pretty much the same ps4 slightly better for performance. However ultimately it will usually fall down on past habits. Im holding out for a PS4 but the ps3 still is holding its own atm.

DuckBoy87 -
I think of nintendo systems for kids, and non serious gamers, I most likely will always own one for Zelda and metroid games alone...the two redeming titles for nintendo.

I bought a 3dsxl specifically for the Ocarina of time 3d remake. It was remade magnificently! Possibly the best game in the history of gaming. On the plus side, you can also download Links Awakening for a couple bucks on the game store.

There is also a new Zelda title coming out later this month for the 3ds...A link between worlds which takes place right after the second best zelda title ever...A link to the past.

ENJOY!

Other than the Zelda titles, Nintendo is nearly worthless, but worth it for those epic games.

I'd prefer PC for the specs and everything, but I like having a machine dedicated to gaming.

I'll eventually get a PS4, whenever a game I want is released.

For now, I'll stick to my 3DS. (Getting the collector's edition Legend of Zelda 3DSXL on Friday!)

Like last generation, the PS4 is more powerful. However, unlike last generation, the new sony console is less expensive than the microsoft counterpart. This could mean the PS4 outselling this time.

It could, but I don't think it's relevant. The extra cache on the XB1 could offset the imbalance to some extent, but both have more than enough power for gaming at 1920x1080 from a couple of yards away or more. Their hardware is essentially a middling PC, which is more than powerful enough for that, and they have the advantage of specialisation (despite MS trying to lose that advantage by making the XB1 jack of all trades).

I think the extra power of the PS4 just isn't going to be noticeable under normal console gaming conditions.

I've always found playing games on a PC a bit lonely. I personally prefer to sit on the couch with a few mates, crack open some beers and have a bash at something multi-player.

I've always preferred the PS to xbox even though some of the previous xbox exclusives were awesome. I think I'm the only person on the planet who actually prefers the PS controllers as well. I find the xbox a little chunky.

I always felt like the PS was a bit more mature and sophisticated than the xbox (bluray for movies and a higher price) but now the PS is actually cheaper I think you'll find alot more kids moving to the PS and generally being annoying.

Haven't owned a console since the Atari 2600, PC is where its at for me.

The next gen console offerings however, offers no cause for a debate. One is totally inferior.

@cobrakiller, "Like last generation, the PS4 is more powerful. However, unlike last generation, the new sony console is less expensive than the microsoft counterpart. This could mean the PS4 outselling this time."

Combine that with the fact the the PS4 is easier to develop for than the PS3 was and I think you are right. I don't think they will see the dominance they had with PS2, but they could very well end up selling more than XB1.
