I was idly thinking about it and I've come up with a plausible false etymology for Erbum.

It would have been possible for a place to be named Herbham, which would roughly translate to 'plant town'. A mixture of languages, but that happened in England and both languages were used here in the middle ages. Herbham is clumsy for speech, so it would be smoothed out in daily usage and could end up as Erbum. Slur the syllables together, then drop the 'h'...it could happen.

There's an error in the Hoax Slayer checking - Hertfordshire is shortened to Herts. The abbreviation follows the spelling, not the pronunciation.

false- but with British place names it could well be true...

Tillet is a name in England. It's a family name, so it's plausible as a place name. Erbum is less plausible, though. It doesn't sound like a place name, even in England. Not English (old, middle or modern), not Old Norse, not Latin, not Brythonic...it just doesn't sound right.

But it's funny anyway.

Apocryphal tale.
When I was a kid, it was Mary Lykes. She was also fond of 'Dickens' cider.
(One of my ex's reckoned that cider was good for wasp stings. Whenever she got a prick in her hand she couldn't wait to get it in cider)
