My cutoff date was Christmas, so because I turned six in late October, I started Grade 1 at five.

Carmium...not agreeing with your logic here...

K = start at 5 should turn 6 by the end of the school year (with the exception of summer birthdays)

1st = 6 turning 7 (again summer birthdays are the exception)

2nd = 7 turning 8

3rd = 8 turning 9

4th = 9 turning 10

5th = 10 turning 11

6th = 11 turning 12

7th = 12 turning 13

other than summer birthdays, one also has to consider cut offs. In order to stay with kids their own age bracket, school districts sets up the cut off birth date to allow to be entered into Kindergarten. So this is the only way I see this being plausible.

The kid could have been held back, but then how is he smart enough to accomplish the feat that he did? unless the reason he was held back is because all he did in his spare time was play video games and hack and didn't study or do homework....

but then again, I didn't study or do HW, but I was never held back...

Taylor: I don't get your arithmetic. Start K at 5; 1st Grade, 6; 2nd, 7; 3rd, 8; 4th, 9; 5th grade, 10 years old! I finished grade 7 at 12 years of age, as did a lot of classmates.

@Waremonger - 12 is pretty typical for a fifth grader... Figuring he started Kindergarten at 5 and was never held back a year, he'd be no less than 11 by the start of fifth grade, and he could have had his 12th birthday during that school year. I got held back in second grade (due to vast difference in education levels in schools between the places I lived) and was 13 before we left fifth grade because my birthday is in the middle of June; about a week before the end of the school year.

12 year old fifth grader? If he's so stupid that he's still in fifth grade at 12 years old there is no way he's "hacking" in the real sense of the word.

Sounds fake. Wouldn't he be able to get any video game he wanted if he had those kind of skills?

The Canadian government should hire him as head of security. Let him hack into new systems to find all the bugs

In the U.S. he'd be tried as an adult and sent to prison for life.

If you can do that without anyone else's script, you can write your own games.
You just need people to contribute pieces of artwork.

Oh dear- that is hilarious. Did he do harm- if not then I reckon they should give him a job- of he did, employ him but pay him less!

@ultimakewl That's what I thought. At 12 he should be a 7th or 8th grader....unless Canada does things differently?

@bloomi: I agree! He's just a "front man" for others.

This is commonplace in my town: gangs (usually race-based) will recruit under-17 & under-15 members to do various crimes. Even if these "kids" get caught? It's NO BIG DEAL! They can get caught 50+ times and NOTHING BAD will happen to them! (That hasn't already happened, of course.)

The day they turn 18? Their records are sealed and they start over with a clean slate!

Raise them to "adult court"? LOLZ! Hahahaha...

If the boy is clever enough to hack websites surely he should be able to work out how to download video games for free? No?
