Jeopardy is vigilant - and as always, they come through with what is justified. His answer was accepted - but seriously, a minor dialectical diversion (which I would have recognized in informal discourse immediately) emphasizing the soft-e vs the hard E? They're on the spot, but seriously, there isn't really another proper name that reflects anything materially similar to "Elaine" no matter how you pronounce it, so that guy who lost $1,000 from answering secondarily should have been refunded his money if the original ruling was incorrect, and honestly: when Alex Trebek is going to such lengths to pronounce the contestant's name correctly (as in, it being foreign and all) there should be some margin for variation accounted for preemptively. In other words, I've heard WORSE iterations of Jeopardy questions what weren't second-guessed in the first place. Alex is a slave to the judges, so there you have it.

Watched this episode, he accidentally added a soft H to the front of the name. This would change the spelling to "Helaine" which is definitively incorrect. There are no hijinks, it's a simple mispronunciation which cost him the cash.
