NO, NO, NO! This is wrong! Even if the statement that people are using the word "literally" in is figurative, the meaning of the word doesn't change--just the syntax of the sentence. If I say, "He is literally ten feet tall," or some other statement which is supposed to suggest hyperbole, "literally" still means "as stated", it is the context of the sentence that changes. In other words, it is not the individual words that create the meaning, it is the context and syntax in which the sentence is spoken. Even if the way that the word "literally" is being used is changing (which I am opposed to, by the way), the dictionaries that are providing new definitions are wrong.

The problem is that dictionaries are chronicles, not authorities.

Why don't they publish a real dictionary with proper words and a colloquialism dictionary for the way stupid people use words?

Literally retarded - figuratively speaking.

I don't mind hyperbole, but really? Do we have to go that far, and make "literally" an autoantonym? I had to look that word up, because I haven't seen it in use!

This just... grah! Why language, why? You've taken away my Oxford Comma, and now you are ruining one of my favorite Frasier episodes!

Meh, it's hyperbole. Not exactly something to get your knickers in a twist over, literally.

I literally could care less...

(Really? "I could care less" is a REGIONAL SLANG PHRASE around here! That's allowed, eh? Eh?)

Reminds of the movie "Alphaville," where dictionaries replace the Bible and new editions have to be printed every day to keep up with the words that are banned or just disappear from usage.
