If you are not happy-blame yourself, not Others. Thank you Mr. Watterson for reminding us what is important.

@plangkye: The "thing" that ZenPencils does is: Takes a person's words (usually a famous person) and illustrates them!
In this case? They took Bill Watterson's ACTUAL WORDS and illustrated them in Bill's STYLE!
Who knows? They may have gotten Bill to do the drawings! (Wishful thinking on my part, eh?)

@FakeBacon, @BDT1981: No worries! Your 'Man Card' is not jeopardised by 'man tears'!!! In fact? They're... MANdatory!!

@Musuko42: Here's another way to look at life...
THAT is the message I see. I thought liberals were "all about" variety? Multi-whateverism? HERE IT IS! A Dad who stays home to lovingly raise his daughter! Thank Heaven his wife is cool with that!

@berenius: Welcome to IAB! Look at my posts below! It's not "all or nothing" eh? k-thx!

While I have lots of respect for Bill Watterson, that little girl will probably be pretty pissed off at her dad when she realizes he has left her with nothing but good intentions when he passes away. He himself probably got some kind of inheritance at some point. Support.

"Climbing ladders" is not only a measure of success, it has a purpose: gaining assets for the sake of your family. Making them comfortable. Improving upon the last generations, with what you got from them. In fact, that little girl will probably be working harder in life than her dad when she starts going to school!

It's okay to take a break from work (or even to quit a job) to raise kids. But working your ass to be successful is part of your responsibilities as a parent too. Trying is the least you can do; otherwise, you are just being selfish.

Stop putting up Calvin & Hobbes references. They just make me cry the manliest tears ever

Well, that made me sad. I would so love to do what I want to do and not what I have to do. I would love to have a little warehouse space to do music and art and maybe have gotten my degree in both. But I would be a very very small fish in a very very big pond. I would be poor and, well, no so happy that I couldn't afford food let alone the flat to live in. I don't think my love of the fine arts would overcome the hunger. Heck, I can barely keep my IT gig with thirty years of experience and three college degrees!

I would be become that which I dislike. I'd be forced to go on government assistance just to get food stamps etc. I'd be a big drain on society. But there would sit my art that only I like! I'd be one of those that can but won't. I doubt most folks who would pursue what this comic suggests would have such a happy ending.

@AvatarJohn

"That's fine if that's what you choose. But don't belittle someone who genuinely enjoys competition, climbing that corporate ladder and having an ambitious, successful career."

Exactly!

I'm tired of seeing these zen pencils comics crop up, because they all have the same preachy attitude: my particular way of enjoying life is right, and everyone else is a fool for not realising it.

Stop worrying about doing things so they look/sound good on facebook. Do things because they look/sound good to you.

@cobrakiller my sentiment exactly. i actually thought the panel where he is pulling his daughter through the woods was ripped straight out of one of his collections. it probably was, now that i think about it.

@Quackor: Please read my comment and RECONSIDER!

She: GP Doctor with impeccable grades and experience.
Made 3 babies going through school = too 8 years to get 6 year degree.

HE: Skilled tradesman with papers.
Worked while she went through school. When she was given a hospital in a small town? He understood how much better it was FOR THEIR KIDS for a parent to be available 24-7.

It could NOT be her! So he signed up for the duty!

It's nothing but good for them, their kids and the entire community they ended up in. Oh yeah, they're early retired and rather "well to do" now. They'd be MUCH POORER had he worked and she stayed home.

I have lots of AWESOME cousins! Just so everyone knows!

All sounds dandy, but I've got some damn bills to pay.. Life is expensive.

@Kegomatix: My cousin (a girl) makes 130K+
Her husband (a skilled tradesman) makes 50K+
So when it came time to raise their 3 kids in a small town? HE stayed home and SHE went to work!
Hey! They were both VERY HAPPY!
SHE: worked 60-80 hours a week (130K was 'basic pay')
HE: Raised 3 kids, took in casual "daycare kids" for $20 a day. Loved it! Worked harder than he ever did at his job though

He discovered all sorts of "bias and bigotry" he'd never imagined existed in society!

After the kids hit middle school? He went back to work some $$500K$$ richer than if she had stayed home!

Point is: It's NOT for everyone! But if it works for YOU? Then good!

ZenPencils = genius! 4.0 for them!

The entire time I was reading this, I kept thinking to myself that this looked like calvin and hobbes. I was incredibly happy to see these were his words.

Not to demean your point, but I think you are missing Watersons'. Your second paragraph seems a rant with no logical connection to the content of the strip, and I didn't see anything in the strip decrying the person who does enjoy the climb up the ladder.

And Waterson was very very successful in his chosen field, I doubt he would be for "stealing away someone's hard-earned property".

But, then again, maybe I'm missing your point.

That's fine if that's what you choose. But don't belittle someone who genuinely enjoys competition, climbing that corporate ladder and having an ambitious, successful career. For some people, that's what gives their life meaning, and if that's what someone likes to do, then let them do it and be happy for them.

And most importantly of all, don't be jealous of their success. If you choose not to be successful in your career, enjoy your life and quit comparing it to others. Supporting stealing away someone's hard-earned property through support of high taxes and regulation is the same as supporting a law stealing away your time with your kids. Whatever you value is yours and yours alone, be it time, fun, money or yachts, and taking it away from someone else will never make anyone's life better.

Damn, these comic-strip characters are so balanced and contented.

I'll take my comic characters mired in Reality's greasy splendor ...
