@JoexBro: The idea is to 'let the opposition know you're there' as my old man used to say (an ex Bath and Gloucester player). If you use your shoulder, it is more effective than trying to grab a piece of shirt and then pulling the player on top of yourself (as this guy did).
I would argue that there is a an intention to hurt but not injure - you go in hard and your opposite number goes in hard - if you don't, then you wont last long against decent opposition.
You then share a beer and compare battle-scars with your opposite number in the club-house afterwards.

JoexBro, there is no intention to injure or hurt someone in the tackle, although sometimes a big crunching tackle can show who is boss.

@som-tam: you have it totally wrong, I believe the idea in rugby is not too injure or hurt someone in the tackle. Also as far as american football goes, you dont go in with the shoulder, a good wr,rb, etc will just get away from you like that, wrapping them up with the arms is important

@Xprez - I don't watch a lot of NFL, but I don't think the gap between professional rugby and NFL is as great as it was. There have been various talks over the years of rugby players going to NFL in fact. I would suspect though that no NFL player would consider the career move. The money in rugby is a lot less to start with and I would think that an NFL player late in his career wouldn't welcome further physical battles.

You're basically looking at the average NFL player. Most RBs would love to play and exploit Rugby.

@5cats, yeah, maybe it does count as defence. Don't watch a lot of 7's, but it's only one tackle.

He looks like a pretty decent player but he needs to work on his tackling technique. Remember kids, tackle with your shoulder, not just your arms!

@maddux The conversion is like the extra point in football but it's two points in rugby.

He's quick but I imagine he'd get sorted out pretty quickly in the 15s game by any of the top wingers, Cory Jane, Bryan Habana, George North etc.

@maddux32 - it means you can take the conversion kick right in front of the posts... EG if you touch down in the corner then you have to take the kick from out by the line meaning you have to deal with the angle and all that crap

I don't get it, so when you touch the ball to the ground in the end zone, it's a touch down or whatever? Is it bonus points if you touch it directly under the goal posts?

@MrRugby: He caught #12 from behind, that counts as defence in Sevens eh?

Note that he's playing against some of the best teams in the world: France, Tonga, New Zealand, South Africa? All powerhouses year after year!

Oh yeah, they're playing 7's (Sevens) Rugby which doesn't have much defence but does have a LOT of running!

Some quick nice finishes, but I don't see any defence? He's playing 7's there which varies slightly from the full game. 7's is a very exciting game and is possibly going to be an Olympic sport.
