Sorry, still don't buy it. Don't need no studies or reports. I've seen way to much suffering. I've so many brilliant people erode in shells of their former selves because of that stuff. I don't think it should be legal, sorry.

saying you have headaches or backaches

So in other words, patient has pains, doctor prescribes marijuana. Patient uses said marijuana feels better and doctor makes money. Sounds like capitalism, I don't see the problem here.

that's not a genuine reason for receiving a schedule I drug

There is no genuine reason for cannabis to be a schedule I drug in the first place. Even the government's own reports say that there are perfectly valid medical uses for it. It's yet another example of how medicine gets politicized.

Cajun: "...doctors aren't prescribing the stuff for the sake of it."

No, most doctors prescribing it, in those states, are doing it for the money. You walk into certain doctors offices and get a medical marijuana card by saying you have headaches or backaches. Sorry but we ALL get headaches and backaches from time to time, that's not a genuine reason for receiving a schedule I drug. It's so easy it's a joke and most people know it.

Mikeox': Physically addicted? Not really. But emotionally or habitually addicted, absolutely. Why do you think the term "pothead" was coined way back in the 60s? I've known people who just lived for their next joint (often at the expense of food and hygiene), and if that isn't a form of addiction, I don't know what you'd call it.
Still, I think keeping its use a criminal offence is a total waste of time and money, however. It can't compare to other street drugs or even cigarettes for addiction.

Because it isn't based on research

<sigh>I'm in agreement with a diehard liberal on this.<sigh>

(Then again I was liberal until Obamacare was passed)

That is where you are wrong, doctors aren't prescribing the stuff for the sake of it. It's because the doctors, in their professional opinion, think it is better than the alternatives. Which in turn is based on repeated studies have shown conclusively that cannabis in certain forms can actually benefit patients in a myriad of ways. And no this isn't same kind of bull5h17 scientific consensus behind AGW; non-political and consistent methods, consistent results.

chalket: Because it isn't based on research, it's based on opinion. Also, when people say it isn't about the money, it's ALWAYS about the money.

Seems to me the ex-junkie has an issue with chemicals and his solution to his own problem is to ban it for anyone. He's a weak minded moron.

Why am I not at all surprised that Closed-Mind CrakrJak cannot conceive of changing one's position based on research and new knowledge? Consistent denial of reality is a must to be part of the GOP base.

The only reason why pot is illegal and tobacco is not is lobby power. Back 150 years ago the tobacco lobby was more powerful in congress than the small marijuana lobby. Congress paid back the tobacco lobby for their donations by making the competition illegal.

Howard Samuels has the logic of a Republican.

How can a person admit that weed is far more beneficial than alcohol and cigarettes and less harmful, but should be controlled more than either? That is completely illogical.

Apparently Gupta's morals are for sale, this time for CNN's TV ratings. I wonder how much he's getting paid for this.

My god we are a stupid, stupid nation.
We make the same mistakes over and over.
We learned nothing from prohibition.
If any substance is easy to get and the populace are in favor of it, You Cannot Outlaw it. People will always ignore stupid laws.

Instead a criminal cartel will control the quality, price, and availability. Just like with alcohol but alas the USA did not learn that lesson.

And we will never legalize it. The guv'ment profits too much from it's illegality. The local and state and federal cops all get to confiscate property {boats, cars homes} through drug busts. The courts get commissions on mandated drug counseling and treatment facilities. The prisons find it cheaper to house non-violent pot smokers than real criminals.

No, we won't legalize it because we are "The Land Of The Free". We will keep it outlawed because the guv'ment makes money off it.

This is your local cynical drunk signing off.

Man, that just gets me. "We don't know very much about this substance, so let's just make it as illegal as possible, just in case. That way it becomes stigmatized, and extremely difficult to learn more about, as it's a controlled substance."

Christ. Talk about having the cart before the horse. Study first, THEN judgment. Is it really that hard?
