I wish I could say that it was the first time I'd heard an older guy with a beard using the phrase 'this is quite a tight fitting sheath' - but I was young and needed the money.

Today I learned that IAB aren't limited to guns in their weapons fetishism. You guys actually own swords?

"I own a sword which goes ka-SHING when you draw it. while its not designed for killing people, you totally could. Its lethal."

I bet the entire scabbard is metal. I have one too, and the scabbard has completely scratched the crap out of and slightly blunted the blade.

It's a crappy 'medieval look-alike'

Every other sword/knife I own has some combination of wood/leather/fur scabbard, the only metal is usually the buckles and sometimes a metal ring around the outside of the opening. (I love the ones with fur on the inside. douse it with a little oil and they turn into self-cleaning and oiling.)

Honestly, no one in their right mind would want to mar up their blade with metal inside the scabbard.

Speaking of Hollywood. My favorite BS item are the guys with a sword longer than their arm strapped to their back... think about it. ;)

That's not a very good katana. A katana draw is so smooth it's like it's on ball bearings.

This would be great info if we believed all of the other noises in Hollywood movies were real. Most of you do know that foley artists make a lot the noises in movies, I hope...

Great video. Did anyone notice how the Foley artist was making that *shhhhiiinng!* sound on the Foley video? He was running a large metal spatula along the edge of the blade.

Going forward, I think Hollywood should have the heroes do that when they draw their blade: "Hold on. Before we fight, I need a LARGE METAL SPATULA or this is all going to sound like crap."

Older ceremonial or parade swords with pretty metal scabbards make that sort of silly sound, but most field carry blades have leather and wood reinforced sheathes. Personally own a few napoleonic era things where the sheath has brass fittings on the ends but that's more a dry rattle when drawn. Shorter blades I've got some old ww1 and 2 era bayonets with metal sheathes about, same sort of dry rattle or scrape sound on being drawn. Everything this guy shows is accurate.

Not surprisingly, TV Tropes has the shinng! listed as an example under The Coconut Effect (unrealistic things becoming so ingrained in media that the audience comes to expect them and will react negatively to their omission).

I have two Nepalese Khukuri the scabbards they have are of wood and metal, the top part is made of metal and it does make a "shing" when the sword is pulled out, I also have a tai Chi sword that does the same thing as well. But he's right most swords don't, it's how the scabbard is sized and constructed that determines it..

I like how his sweater matches the throw on his sofa in the background.

So Hollywood jazzes things up a bit. Hummm...

Is the light sabre sound real or is that Hollywood buffoonary too?
