And it's working.. well.. sort of.. except..

I'm Finnish, Fenno-Scandinavian and European, in that order. We've lived with Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland in a passport union since -65. It was kind a weird for foreigners to just casually drive from Denmark to Finland just like there were no borders.. And in the East, the border is 5km wide no-mans-land and no entering without visa, quite a difference.

As clear an explanation as I've ever heard

"So, what you're saying is that they tried to U.S. but, didn't quite get it right because every one is tryin to Texas when even Texas didn't successfully Texas. Got it."

A decent comparison, with key differences in the starting circumstances:

The american states had hardly any history as independent entities before unification - the european countries had millenia.

The american states had a strong unifying force - independence as a new country - and popular support for unification with a widespread self-identification to that effect (i.e. as Americans). None of that is true for Europe. I have yet to meet anyone who calls themselves a European.

Even with all that, the USA fought a brutal civil war and still has widespread civilised disputes about the appropriate amount of independence for states.

A real EU? Maybe in a couple of centuries. Perhaps.

The European Union isn't a union and isn't entirely European. As far as I know, every country in it claims to be paying into it more than they get out of it. That sounds impossible, but given how inefficient it is it might be possible.

It's not really possible to just slop a couple of dozen countries together and call them unified. Imposed unification often ends very badly - it only seems to work if it's imposed by force for long enough for it be become reality.

France also has the tiny islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon, hanging off the underside of Newfoundland. Go figger.

yeah one big heaving pile of rubbish straining under it's own weight. should have stuck to trade agreements. Not long now before it nosedives into the toiletbowl. but then that seems to be the case for most economies atm?

It's a wonder that such a simple thing has not done well economically. Boggles the mind how 50 countries operating with 50 sets of laws couldn't maintain a stable economic environment.

The things that make you go hmmmm
