If we ever meet, remind me to treat you like dirt. Because I am most definitely better than you are. Smarter, kinder, more noble, etc.

Seriously, though, I am often surprised by your posts. As a gay man in your 50s, I would expect you to have experienced a fair bit of prejudice and undeserved ill-treatment in your lifetime. I'm really surprised you can still be as bigoted as you come across.

OsirisXero - Pretty damn clear I wasn't talking about past history.
Despite what Al and Jesse might say, having a great grandpa who was a slave doesn't justify the glorification of violence and racism today.

Continueing on the "respect" theme...

The muslim culture is "different" than mine. And in my view, it's barbaric. They keep their women as virtual slaves. Widows are not permitted to work to support their children, just left to die. Their punishments are brutal and barbaric. They'll shop off a limb or stone you to death. And anyone who disagrees with them must die.

No, I do not "respect" that culture. It is not worthy of my respect. This soft-head idea that we have to embrace and accept everyone is ridiculous. I would no sooner respect them than I would a Klansman who wants to reinstate segregation. They have very similar beliefs.

" But does that mean that they deserve our respect any less? "

Yes, yes it does. Respect is something that is EARNED not something everyone is entitled to. If a person is to lazy, stupid, or morally bankrupt to do the right thing {whatever that is} why should I give them respect?

I know 5 black men that have said only white people can be prejudiced. Blacks cannot be.? They had no idea how bigoted that remark is.

Rachael Jeantel, the Zimmerman witness, said it's a racial crime. "because he died". When asked if Trayvon's "creepy ass cracker" and "f*cking n*gger" comments were racist she said, "no" it's not racist.

If I don't like people, it's not bigotry, it's because they have shown me with their behavior they are not my equals. That's called Experience, not prejudice.

Conversely, there are people who after better than I am. Smarter, kinder, more noble, etc.

Yes, because apparently the glorification of violence and selfishness is limited to just Blacks and Muslims. You might want to think about picking up a history book or two, my friend.

You might want to put down the book and step outside to see the biggest perpetrators of it today not over 100 years ago......

@Gerry1of1 - You're right, some people are different. A lot of people are a lot dumber than others. But does that mean that they deserve our respect any less?

Fair enough, if they are stupid AND an arsehole. But if they are a nice enough person, but not the brightest spark, surely they deserve our respect too?

What the teacher was trying to get across is that it's not nice to treat others as if they are more stupid and less important than yourself purely based on a superficial aspect of their physical appearance i.e. eye colour. Whether or not they are stupid is irrelevant, they are calling them stupid BECAUSE they have blue/brown eyes, not because they are stupid.

If that makes sense...

Phuc this IAB comment limit! It cut me off at 938 characters. I though I had left enough margin for error below the 1,000 mark. I can accept that the script cannot count, but a warning pop-up would help a lot.

"What if the people you are prejudiced against really are dumber/less moral, more corrupt or whatever?"

What if your racism is well founded?

Despite any moral misgivings, you have a point. I understand the ethical position that prejudice is destructive, yet I cannot bring myself to tell you that you may not harbour a prejudice. I feel it is your right.

Why? Because prejudice is an offshoot of natural psychology; if we see a coin toss come up tails 95% of the time, it is natural to expect tails the next time. It's a way that we make decisions quickly.

Nevertheless, xenophobia (*irrational* fear of the unfamiliar) is unhelpful to both the judge and judged. Just bear this in mind.

Also be aware that in every population, there are exceptions. Give people the opportunity and you can dismiss them when you have corroboration.

If you must be racist, I find it more effective to be prejudiced against cultures, rather than physical t

this is more an example of people doing whatever a person in a position of power tells them to do. not one of race. The teacher was obviously familiar with the 'Milgram experiment' and used her knowledge to manipulate her students to further her marxist beliefs.

"Did you see the Zimmerman trial today?
The prosecutions Star Witness ?

Definitely NOT my social equal."

Depends on the social environment, doesn't it? It's quite relative...

I hate people who are so weak,so stupid, they have god(s) so they don't have to be responsible for thinking for themselves.

If only life were that simple...but it's not. I think as a society the vast majority of us have moved past blind racism...hating someone just for the color of their skin.
It's in the cultural differences that we are still divided. I don't care what color someones skin is, but I do not like cultures that glorify violence and selfishness. Such as American black culture and muslims.

Why not?
If they are different shouldn't they be treated different? You don't treat dogs the same way you treat cats? They respond differently.

It all depends on what is meant by 'treated differently'. People are treated differently based on 'intelligence' all the time. For example anyone who cannot achieve high enough scores in medical school will be denied a medical license. Someone who cannot pass a bar exam will not be a lawyer etc. If you are saying that someone should not be allowed to live in a certain place, use the same restroom, be denied access to public places etc. just because they are not as intelligent, then sorry but that is wrong.

You should also be glad that is wrong, as most of us would be on the loosing end of that stick.

As much as I love the 80's movie "Breakfast Club", that tried to break down the walls of cliques and open kids eyes, we all knew deep down that such an alliance wouldn't have lasted.

It did, however, teach us to take the hard edge off our prejudices, look deeper than just the surface and realize that even our own cliques wouldn't survive much past high school.

Seen this in jr. high, it was as much bunk as it is now. Why? Because even within people of the same background they'll form cliques (groups) and some will even be ostracized. Even kids like myself that were taught to be unprejudiced, taught to be "sensitive" to others feelings still formed our own groups and displaced others.

It's human nature to form cadres. You can try to fight segregation and stereotypes all you want, but as long as people still naturally flock together like birds they will continue to seek their own trends and societal norms within them and exclude others from their group.

But our society is so terrified of not being seen as fair you have companies that will promote a so-called minority over a better performing white person in order to appear balanced.

@Gerry

Actually you answered your own question:
That was a class of peers, equals socially & intellectually from the same {white mid/class} background.

If everyone was treated equally, there wouldn't be a problem. Although everyone cannot be from the same economic background and some people will be more 'intellectual' than others, it does not mean they should be treated differently.

(BTW there are over 100 different types of intelligence, which are you referring to?)

@MrPeabody I think it's theoretical. What if it's known that a group of people are dumber. (Not based on a race or gender, based on dumbness..)

What if the people you are prejudiced against really are dumber/less moral, more corrupt or whatever?

The question is why are these people (perceived) to be dumber/less moral? Is it because they have been treated this way? Have they been conditioned by society to believe they are inferior? Have they been denied the opportunity to get the same education?

Ignorant people come in all colors, and so do smart people.
