As a matter of interest to the 'moaners about death and danger'. When I was last on the Island, there were more people killed in skiing accidents in Europe in one year, than competitors killed racing in all of the TT races since they began.
Idiot or Brave?
Adrenaline rush!

I did the IOM TT in 1984-1987 as a spectator; 3 yrs on an XS850, 2yrs on an FJ1200. It is an absolute hoot, a buzz, and a celebration of life as an adrenaline-junkie. The racing, beer, nightlife, etc make it something that has to be done.
Do not expect any level of sophistication, except by the competitors. The 'competition' is a time trial: The riders set off at regular intervals, and race against the clock to try to beat previous records and be better than the next man/woman.
One of the best things about the riders is that there are few Prima-donnas; they stay in your hotel/guest-house/B&B, eat breakfast with you in the morning and drink beer with you after the racing is over.
Brave? No.
Idiot? No.
Adrenaline junkie? Yes.

It's the TT race, and right then I think you were watching (most of the time) the arse of Michael Dunlop who this year had almost a total clean sweep of the races (he missed out on the big one). Asked why they do it, they said it's because of the buzz. It's a bit like some military people I know who say you don't really know what it's like to feel alive until you're being shot at.

Sadly with the TT though it does remain highly dangerous and people do get killed; this year a Japanese rider was killed when he came off his bike at something like 130mph.

These people aren't idiots, they're professional motorbike racers, with most of the top people belonging to professional race teams that are fully kitted out and spend $000,000's a year.

Now if you want to see crazy, try watching the side cars do it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPwRskMuaEc<

It's good that there are still racing venues where people are free to defy likely death to compete. It's bad that anyone actually shows up to compete or watch.

I'd say doing stuff like that during closed-road races is both brave and very courteous. The idiots are the ones who do it on public roads.

It's a closed road: they're in a race!

Pretty brave. Going fast on 2 wheels is always dangerous.
