Everyone should ignore AvatarJohn. His last post proves that he only has 2 brain cells; one is dead and the other one is only firing randomly. Of course he's in the South, so that's pretty common. I just drove through the South last week and couldn't believe how different it is from the rest of the country. It's pretty sad and just plain scary in some ways.

AvatarJohn: That's not the way most people I know use it. You is singular. Y'all (you all) is plural. I cringe when I hear people on TV shows trying to do a Southern accent and talking to one person as "y'all." It's illogical. Maybe some people do, but I don't hear it much. Some people say "all y'all," but I never hear "y'all" used in the singular.

FYI: "y'all" is singular. e.g., "Hey Fred, are y'all coming to get some Chick-fil-A?"

"All y'all" is plural. e.g., "Hey guys, are all y'all coming to get some sweet, sweet Chick-fil-A?"

P.S. I love how expressing support for a thousands-years-old tradition and foundation of modern society is now known as "marriage discrimination". But expressing support for sexual perversion and the destruction of a sacred, holy, foundational institution is called "support for marriage equality". Nice double-speak there.

Uhm, the subject was food, not grammar. STFU and eat.

Howler: You have a point there. I think we non-Southerners mostly object to hearing "y'all" when there are two people in the room. Also, we are quite comfortable saying things like "You all know Mr Brown..." or "You are all welcome..." That way people don't think we're talking about a two-masted sailboat, either.

Trust me: Y'all sound just as odd to us as we do to y'all. Non-regional dialect is a myth. :)

Also - fun fact: Many non-native English speakers choose to attend Southern universities. Why? Southerners tend to speak more slowly, making it easier to learn English here. So some the best-and-brightest from other countries end up here. Neat, huh?

One more point: English is in dire need of a pluralized "you" like many other languages have. I think "y'all" -- being a contraction of "you all" -- is probably the best choice. So don't knock it. It's a logical addition to the language, and I'm holding out hope that the rest of y'all adopt it. Thoughts?

Southern US accents make my skin crawl. Don't know why, I've known several very lovely Souherners. Just hate the accents.

My youngest son was born on the west coast, and raised in North Carolina. He took on quite the weird accent and now that we're back on the west coast we are trying to break it.. Could take a while.

If you put the breading ingredients in a plastic baggie (freezer size), you can shake and coat the chicken it it and transfer directly to the oil. Doesn't make a sick mess. Shake 'n bake! Or fry...

Oh! Thank you Squrlz!
The actual "southern accent" S&B ad showed up in the 60s and was SO different from anything we'd heard that we were mocking it for weeks! As northern kids, We thought the accent sounded hilarious.

@ Carmium: I remember those commercials. I just did a quick look up, and it appears they're still making Shake 'n Bake. Haven't had that in eons. Kind of a time warp back to the '70s, in fact. Yes, picture this: A dinner of Shake 'n Bake, mashed potatoes, and peas served with a glass of whole milk--followed by some Duncan Hines cake. Just the kind of dinner to eat after watching The Brady Bunch. LOL

I do not eat KFC or any other chicken from a fast food place for ethical reasons, but I quite like it. Making your own means you can use free range chicken or quorn- which works quite well. I recommend it!

Can one not make a Karma-balancing donation to a gay-equality campaign equal to the value of the purchase?

BTW, is 6 minutes really long enough to cook chicken so it's safe to eat?
