Just in case anyone looks at a photo of a painting or sculpture and thinks it's a medieval Scotsman wearing a kilt:

Look at the whole garment, not just the hemline.

Scottish people, like many people in many places at many times, often wore a dress (usually with other clothing due to the temperature in Scotland). It might look like a kilt, but it isn't.

Cue people raging because I called it a dress. It's a dress. Don't make the mistake of applying modern gendered dress codes to the past - dresses were not always feminine.

If by "quite recent" you mean 400+ years ago, I will agree.

They're 17th century, so not over 400 years.

That is quite recent given that they're so often depicted as medieval or even earlier. 400 years ago is quite recent on the scale of British history.

"when in fact they're quite recent"

You must be Irish, 'cause only the Irish keep pushing that old lie.

Nah, a lot of people from other countries believe it. Like a lot of people believe that kilts are ancient when in fact they're quite recent. There's a lot of misinformation about Scottish and Irish history stemming from nationalism. Some people even think that Braveheart is a history rather than a collection of lies to promote and profit from nationalist prejudices.

I glanced at the first dress and thought the cow was out of the barn.

@OldOllie first of all...they look different. The officer tunic is more like a coat than a dress. Look at that uniform on Picard, it looks ok, i mean i would wear it.
On the other hand you have that on a man with shaved legs..how can that be official. Also, short sleeves.
Even if it was some kind of uniform how would that go: "hey..i'm going to dress formal today", leaves the room, "i have a feeling i forgot something...hmm ... oh..right... pants!" (and presumably underwear).

I would love to have the comfort of a skirt. nothing squashing and squeezing my balls, no temprature rising etc. But nothing above the knee. I'm not a slut you know...

You have to feel for this guy. He never made it big as an actor. He's only remembered as "the guy in the mini-skirt". What a claim to fame that is. His mum must be so proud.

@skytz1337 Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that just a Starfleet officer's formal tunic with no pants?

I don't understand. What's so weird about Sarah Jessica Parker modeling dresses.

I gotta say, kilts are way more comfortable than pants. Makes sense, trousers have all those seams gathered up, pinching and binding your most sensitive bits. A kilt let's you have some room for comfort.

Here's a Scottish barstool.

Trivia for you, kilts were invented in Ireland.

No, I wouldn't wear one of those outfits...

...because they don't have useful pockets.

Also, trousers are more practical. Especially around here, because it's rarely hot.

I wouldn't care about the gender aspect of them, though. Gender is a silly idea. Gender is mostly just fashion anyway and I don't care about fashion.

The middle dress is very close to being a Roman tunica, which was the almost universal garment for Romans regardless of age or sex. This would have been considered a very masculine style because of its length - men wore them short, women wore them long.

Gender isn't very real. It's mostly just made up, which is why it varies so much from place to place and from time to time.

I'd totally rock that white outfit, but the boots need to lose the "frilly" top...
