Looks like he was the JM, he was looking for the drop zone...

@patchgrabber - Yeah, the riggers pack everything in the military as far as I know. The only guys who pack their own are SF who do HALO & HAHO jumps, but their chutes are still inspected by a rigger before the jump.

Just to be even more picky, he slowed down and the plane left without him.

Ha - this. Hilarious.

Here is a little info:
"An army paratrooper from 5th SFG accidentally deploys his reserve parachute inside the plane. The solider sustained no serious injuries, but landed 30 miles from the intended drop zone."

It happened a week ago, US Army at it's finest. It was a MC-6 reserve (you can see the red handle).

@Draculya the funny part is, he is a JM.

Must be kinda weird kneeling on an open porch attached to an airplane doing 250 knots.

They cut the engine when someone is jumping, so they are slowed down a bit. It's exhilarating climbing out though and dangling thousands of feet above ground.

That's why it's important to make sure your chute is packed properly and never piss off the riggers.

Reserve 'chute might not have been packed by him. The reserves are spring-loaded to ensure that they deploy 100% of the time, they are so powerful that if it had opened inside the plane it would have likely killed them all. I have my solo certificate but even I can't pack the reserve, it takes a specially trained person to do that.

That guy shot out so fast he probably blacked out from the G-force on his brain and circulatory systems. Maybe even some dislocated shoulders.
That is fun to watch on replay. Keep clicking right before it happens and watch how hard it rips him out of there! Hope that dude is alright.

Y'know?" My wife did that, standing on the ramp open of a flying C130 with no chute. Her safety brief was "If you fall out spread your arms and legs out and one of the lads will come get you". LOL, Philippines. Divorce is illegal there.

@draculya

That's crazy. We were always taught how to handle that situation, glad we never had to.

@freddyferret

There isn't a damn thing they could have done about it. Their reaction doesn't surprise me at all.

I call BS. They didn't seem to be too surprised by it.

Both he and his buddy/JM should have inspected the reserve pin and loop prior to boarding. I think the accidental deployment may have been caused by something snagging on the D-ring.

@Kegomatix I have seen a reserve open in a climbing C-182 with an open door. Oh man, we all jumped on it. The problems with the reserve are (1) It's on a spring (2) it's designed to catch air quickly (3) you can't cut away (4) if it gets into the airflow you are leaving the aircraft and not necessarily cleanly through the doorway (5) Cessnas don't fly well missing a tail

You bring up a good question Gerry. Is it better to be sucked out or is it better to pull out?

Lol... Damn, I've seen a lot of crazy poo happen out of all my jumps, but never that.

@whodat

%100 correct. Riggers might piss you off, but on jump day they're your best friends.
