Bill Clinton was called the first African American president because he was so black-friendly {whatever that is}.

"D. None of the above..."
"single-parent household, born poor, working-class, saxophone-playing"
Or, you could just consider that Clinton has African ancestors...

D. None of the above. His birth certificate is from Hawaii and his mother is white! That would be a Mulatto-American!

It's not as easy as you think. According to Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison, the answer is Bill Clinton.

In 1998, Nobel laureate Toni Morrison called Clinton "the first Black president", saying, "Clinton displays almost every trope of blackness: single-parent household, born poor, working-class, saxophone-playing, McDonald's-and-junk-food-loving boy from Arkansas".

And that applies to white folks from Africa.

Only those born in Africa and become American citizens are African Americans. Sooooooo lame.

Black, that works. Mixed race- that works too.
My niece has it sorted- she is brown, I am shiny.
I like that- the world is two colours- Brown and shiny.

@sparki1980 Yea, African-American doesn't really make sense in many contexts anyways. The best example was a guy trying to explain a news story to my professor where 3 "African-Americans" were protesting something in Spain. African...Spanish...Americans? Or African-American...Spanish? wait..no that doesn't sound right either.

"By genealogy you mean color of skin and by country of origin you mean the continent where her family has about 100 years of history?"

No by genealogy I mean her ancestors. Thousands of years of history.

If my parents are english and their parents are english, and so on for 40 generations I probably don't identify myself as Asian-American because I happened to be born while they were on vacation in India.

Yes. Well. The term african-american refers to genealogy, not country of origin.

Well this white actress is more african-american than many who call themselves as such:

Maybe we should just start using the term black again cause it's more descriptive.
