But science is based on asking the question "why?" over and over again and the moment you say "Because God chose to make it this way" then you are completely worthless for the scientific community. There are still many religious people who contribute because they don't accept "God did it" as an answer. But that also means that they believe that the vast majority of the bible is fake. Sure, they believe in God, but they don't believe in creationism or noah's ark or any of that stuff.

Nihilism, Booo. Oh well, guess I'll just go to Mexico. That'll save me a ton of gas money.

"Interesting that the most intolerant comments here are from the atheists."

Yes. I am intolerant of stupidity. Apologies. Don't take it personally, it isn't directed specifically at christians. If you believed in the easter bunny I would think you were just as dumb. Christianity just gets the brunt of it because it is the only mass delusion that is not only accepted, but encouraged.

"I'll see your Newton and raise you an Einstein."

You know Einstein was an atheist right? Is that what you meant?

"Newton was extremely devout, there is zero evidence he was religious out of fear or to appease authority."

I'm not saying he was faking it. However when your parents, everyone you have ever met, and basically everyone period has one belief system it pretty much negates atheism as an option.

Not to mention Newton was dealing with VERY basic laws of physics that don't in any way contradict a belief in God or the Bible. Now take that same devout scientist and put him studying evolution or the big bang or fossils and maybe he isn't capable of figuring out the truth because it contradicts his infantile belief system.

AvatarJohn: Without Newton, there is no Einstein. Even Einstein attributed his own achievements allegorically to standing on Newton's shoulder. In But even so, both were brilliant. I'm not so crass as to say an atheist cannot be good at something.

As for prisons, as it has been mentioned earlier, you'd have to look at their religiousness BEFORE they went to prison. You know, when they committed the crime. Once they are in prison the ballgame changes... There is grouping phenomenon, for social reasons and for protection. Being a loner in prison is not a good idea. And since established religions are afforded privileges, it makes sense for people to flock toward them. This also tends to look good at parole hearings. It's amazingly stupid to imply only religious people go to prison.

Speaking of prisons, about 20% of the prison population is Muslim and about 25% consist of illegal aliens.

So I'm not sure what Ricky's point is on the prison population. Maybe that atheists tend to be rich, white, privileged snobs who tend to have the means to defend themselves in court? Is he saying that he's proud of the racism inherent in the US criminal justice system? Just being devil's advocate... er... the anti-science's advocate? Whatever.

Interesting that the most intolerant comments here are from the atheists. Just a thought that you might want to find out how most Christians view their faith before you keep spouting off about it; you'all claim to be the smart ones but your views of following Christ are way way way off.

HG: Newton was extremely devout, there is zero evidence he was religious out of fear or to appease authority. Yet, I can't think of a anyone who has contributed more to math and science than him.

In order to prove you wrong on your litmus test for 'good scientist', I would only need to show one example in the contrary. In this case, you wouldn't have slightly misjudged or a tad off, you would have dismissed perhaps the greatest mathematical and scientific mind in history. That's how wrong you'd be.

"I'll see all atheist contributions and raise you Newton."

Ahh yes the early 1700s, a time when it was illegal to not be a Christian. Staggering how that works eh?

"Then by your own admission you are a discriminating hypocrite."

Nope, it is simply an odds game. Let's say 1 in 20 Christians is capable of rational scientific thought. Then let's say 10 of 20 atheists are. I'm going atheist every time because my odds are better, even though that 1 in 20 Christian could be a great scientist.

What would be left behind? 7% of scientists that are interested in making large leaps in science instead of siphoning off tax payer dollars

Thanks, I needed a good laugh. You...were kidding right? If only all these useless scientists would get out of the way so that that faithful could make the great discoveries, huh? You have no idea how science works, which is probably a good thing, so long as you are never in charge of science policy, because by your method it would take even longer for anything to get done.

@Magentab0b "So when the Exodus of Atheist occurs anyone need a ride to Canada? I'll start at the Mexican border and drive up the 5. Just stand on the freeway with a cardboard sign that says, "Science Needed.""

Unfortunately our current right wing government is anti-science amongst other things. Luckily religion, so far at least, hasn't invaded our daily lives as much as it seems to below the border.

I currently share an office with another scientist who identifies as christian, he's still a good scientist, I just don't know how he reconciles that belief system with what we know from science. The numbers are likely somewhat off, but they're probably more accurate than you think. I'm not sure what it's like in the US, because up here your religion is your own business and no one pushes it on you, so I'm fairly certain there's no religious discrimination here. We don't have prayer meetings or anything like that...unless you go to church, which is where they belong anyway.

@FinePoint, that IS Ricky Gervais' point, that if the ATHEISTS leave the country (he thinks) that less that 1% of the prison population would be affected... so it would work... IF this was true :)

Hmmm lets see, you get to go listen to sermons on Sundays and other holidays OR you can sit in your cell.

FinePoint: No, it works out perfectly. Read it again. If all those losers in jail get religion, and the atheists leave, you wouldn't get many from the prisons, would you?

prison is a weird place....most of the inmates end up finding god while they're in. so, that whole 1% doesn't really work, does it?
