Yes. Lets book a one way trip to mars when we dont even have the technology to get to the moon and establish a base.

We've had the technology for decades. What we don't have is a good reason to spend all that money.

The idea behind the Mars One mission is to pay for Mars exploration by making it a reality show. Seriously. They're planning to have video feeds of all the "characters," who will be chosen by the public, and air the show during prime time with sponsors. It's either crazy or brilliant. I haven't decided which yet.

But if the whole venture goes like other settlements in new worlds, it'll go something like this:

1. Colonists, who have little clue of what they're getting into, set off with much fanfare to the New World.

2. Said colonists are able, just barely, to subsist in New World and eagerly await a supply ship, which will make things much better.

3. Back in the Old World, new priorities intervene: war, financial crisis, natural disaster, etc. Resupply ship is delayed, cancelled, or destroyed by mishap.

4. Colonists go mad with hunger and resort to cannibalism.

Should make for some gripping telebision. =O.O=

There are some alarmingly naive people in those applications. They have not thought through the concept of 1-way properly.

Dear Ted, you are stupid. We have the tech and ability but the moon hasn't anything worth colonizing for. Mars on the other hand has rich deposits of resources for eventual self sustainability and expansion without help from home as well as the highest chance for some terraforming.

@Gerry--No, of course the UN doesn't hold extraterrestrial jurisdiction; that would defy their already established mores on extraterrestrial real estate. The Outer Space Treaty was written up in the sixties because the UN opined that the cosmos were our Earthly heritage and that the misuse of such a virgin expanse would be regrettable.

I'm sure that if one blasts off to Mars no one is going to be going after them...but one may suffer prosecution if they ever wished to return. (I don't know, to the best of my knowledge it's never been done so I'm not entirely sure what sort of repercussions, if any, would be in place)

Also, I already did state that a way to circumnavigate the necessity of the Convention on Registration of Launched Objects into Outer Space would be to set up base in a non-member nation.

You know the Chinese are planning to go to the moon, right? Initially, the purpose is ostensibly scientific, but really patriotic. There is also talk of exploiting resources. If that is so, one logical way to repatriate those resources is a railgun to high-orbit around the earth. That equipment also has the potential to shower high-velocity moon rocks over the USA.

@freddyferret Are you running AVG antivirus? If you are, did you happen to accidentally get the AVG Security Toolbar foisted on you? If you did, that can make your computer run like total crap.

It creates a file called toolbar_log.txt on your C: drive that becomes HUGE. It grew to over 22 Gb on one PC. On two others it took ALL of the free space on C:. On another it was "only" 4 Gb, but it had over 19,000 fragments. Defrag didn't do anything except waste time and say I had to run it again.

If you got this rotten piece of half-baked crapware:

1. Go to Add/Remove Programs, and uninstall AVG Security Toolbar.

2. Find and delete the toolbar_log.txt file.

3. Run defrag again.

I've heard of cases where it reappears, and the only way to get rid of it is to reformat. However, there's a trick. Delete toolbar_log.txt, and watch for it to reappear. When it does, right-click it and set it to Read Only to keep it from growing.

@ Geogypsy - and interesting political point. Does the United Nations have jurisdiction over other planets? I do not think their authority extends to Mars. Not even all of Earths countries acquiesce to the UN.

I think that was how they chose the Jamestown settlers.

First thing we do is send all the lawyers on the list, then the community organizers, then anyone with a degree that has the word "Studies" in the name. If there's any space left after that, we can pack it with sociologists, diversity officers, recycling coordinators, Amway salesman, and outbound call center workers, but NOT TELEPHONE SANITIZERS!!!

At this point, Ekaterina gets my vote. I suspect she is an android, so she is uniquely qualified.

I'd sign up myself if I could share a bunk with Maricia. Sure, the whole mission might burn up on entry into the Martian atmosphere. But we'd have plenty of sexy fun time on the long, cold trip out there.

not to mention you'd be famous

Like Jamestown Famous .... who were they again?
No, I think it unlikely they'll make it through entry into Mars atmosphere. But I would still go.

Gerry, not to mention you'd be famous, like history books famous. You would, essentially live forever through the legacy you'd leave behind. That's pretty cool, actually. Too bad I'm afraid of space. All that lack of oxygen stuff just freaks me out.
