"Lies. 100,079,252.77 sharks per YEAR? A little bit of research into the reproduction cycle of sharks shows that they reproduce relatively slowly and some shark species take 20-30 years to reach sexual maturity. Why does every "animal rights" ass hat have to lie?"

First of all, if you're going to claim something is a lie then be sure to give a reference that contains the truth.
Secondly, less than half of those 100 million are killed for shark fins. Baby sharks, unlike grown ones, are considered a delicacy in many places and account for half of the annual shark capture.

And lastly, sharks mate about once every 3 years and their litters can reach up to 100 sharks. They reach maturity in 15 years and their average life span is 30. So, with a normal life-span years a female sharks can make 250 baby sharks on average. 125 of those will make 250 more, and so on. In 45 you can turn 2 sharks into 20 million sharks. Really slow.

What you said makes no sense whatsoever. If we can hunt them then we can eat them if we want. We're at the top of the food chain now, we don't share that place with any other species, so we get to eat whatever we want. We don't eat lions or wolves or polar bears because not only are they endangered species but we can only find them in specific parts of the globe. It would be extremely expensive to get lion meat and it probably wouldn't taste as good as beef, chicken or pork.
Sharks, apart from their fins, don't taste very good either, so only their fins are gathered. However, unlike lions and polar bears, sharks are everywhere.

Culture smhulture, there's no conundrum about this one: sharks are not on our menu, never has and never will be. Eating another apex hunter is extremely stupid and use to be really dangerous. Now that the danger is removed by our minds, does not mean we can start eating them, just because we can. No one really considers eating a lion or a wolf and that must be because ultimately, our bodies know it's not the kind of sustenance we need so it tastes horrible to us.. Sharkfin soup might taste fantastic but it just sounds wrong.

It's sort of a cultural thing, like whaling.

So, now, the conundrum; infringe on the culture or watch them go extinct?

It is a great shame that so many sharks are killed. I would put an almost total ban on it, with fines even for bycatch. I didn't have any at my wedding in Hong Kong and I used to campaign against it, but campaigns won't have any effect because the Chinese just look at this chart as if you'd shown pictures of pigs. Only difference is, the sharks are a status symbol that marks their new-found wealth.

We need more cities to enact laws against selling shark fins. Places with big Chinatowns like San Francisco, Vancouver, New York, and especially Asian cities like Manila, have to give a damn and ban the trade outright. If restaurants can't sell the stupid soup, they'll stop buying the fins.
(I don't know if any of the cities above have already enacted bans.)

Oh, you misunderstood. This is plea to increase the intelligence of the shark so they can eat more people. Gotta level the field.

Most of the sharks are dumped in the ocean after their fins are removed. Not even using the whole animal, just letting it die.
