I think you guys in the New World have confused the conceptof 'Tip' and 'Salary'. You should do womething about it, and while your at it, please start using kilometeres and meters. Thank you.

@keyth: In Canada it's minimum wage (about $10 hour now) PLUS any tips they may get.

I do know some US States have a lower pay rate for food service staff, to reflect them getting tips.

@Fwoggie2: Cool story! Quebec doesn't represent the rest of Canada, although bad service can happen anywhere...

@carmium: I'm "old school" and tip 10% pre-tax, which is about 12%. I've had servers suggest 25%! Good golly! You didn't even capture, kill, clean, cook it!!

Having worked in a few kitchens, I know a lot of cooks get NO tip money. Some places have "tip sharing" though.

(For reference, I usually tip 15-20%)

Now see, I had a big bust up over tipping with a waiter in Montreal once. Went there with a NY couple for some beers. They told us to sit wherever we liked and it was table service. Came up, took the order, first beer arrived about 5 or 6 minutes later. We ran out, and I tried several times to get the roving barman's attention, before walking up to the bar and getting my own (with difficulty, because the barmaid behind the bar was far more interested in her gossip mag). Another couple of times it happened and we got fed up and decided to find some place else. The bill was $64.50 CAD, so we left $65 on the table and walked out.

He comes running out after us screaming we hadn't left a tip. Of course I hadn't, it was table service, minus any service of any kind and I told him so. He broke into French, called me and my mother lots of nasty things, so I broke into fluent French and asked him if he was gonna shut up or if I should chat with his boss instead. He backed off

Fwoggie2: They're required to make at least minimum wage. If they do not meet minimum wage with their hourly wage and tips within a work week (I think), then the restaurant is required to pay the rest of their wage to make sure they're at minimum wage.

The way it is done, they also get to file their own income with the government which often results in, if they're smart (or dumb, depending on how you look at it), them making a decent bit over minimum wage, but only paying taxes based off of the minimum wage salary.

Someone who works off of tips at the very least makes what a minimum wage person does, and usually makes more while paying less taxes than they should because of the wonderfully evadable tax code.

Fwoggie2: That's what we're told, although restaurant employees would have you think 20% is a starting point! I've often wanted to stick it to a server for really bad service, but it's hard to know how much the kitchen has had to do with a slow order, and the food quality is, of course, their responsibility.
I'm surprised so many people put tips in jars when picking up take-out orders and at coffee shops where you serve yourself. If I don't get service, I don't tip for it, and tapping a coffee urn two steps away doesn't cut it.

I assume it's still 15-20% for bars and restaurants, right? Unless the service deviates from the norm up or down?

The madness of the tipping culture in N America.

Why there isn't a minimum wage law to give restaurant and bar servers a workable living wage instead of having to rely on tips beats me...
