Eh, I'd still be dating that guy if he wasn't so opinionatedly oblivious in a mild but ceaselessly annoying intolerant way. It'd be like if Screech from Saved by the Bell wouldn't shut up about how women shouldn't have sex before marriage.

@musuko42: The point, which seems to have eluded you, is this:
Gun Grabbers argue that less guns = safety
They point at Britain and Australia, where "gun murders" have declined slightly since massive gun restrictions.
HOWEVER: #1 Most US States have WAY MORE guns per capita and LOWER overall crime rates than those places.
#2 "Gun Crimes" may or may not have dropped in B&A, but all other crimes have increased
#3 Meanwhile in the USA: guncrimes AND overall crime has been DROPPING despite the INCREASE in the number of guns owned by LAWFUL US citizens!
#4 The States with the strongest "gun restrictions" are the States with the MOST gun crime!
#5 If you take "race-based gang violence" out of the US numbers? It's not all that different from Europe...

SO: The PROBLEM is not the number of LEGAL guns! It's ILLEGAL GANGS! ffs...

@Musuko42

Now how do you make guns "safer?" You know they have this thing on them called a saftey it keeps them from firing.

Your government DOES make laws to make vehicles safer. Seatbelts? Airbags?

You've kinda just talked yourself into defeating your own argument: laws are made to make cars safer, so why not guns?

Higher than "some" states...meaning four states? The four states with the lowest murder rates in your list? Heavens, it's a disaster for the UK!

Why does that graph only show a handful of states anyway? What about the rest?

also.... automobiles kill approx 34,000 people in the U.S. annually...

we need to have congress make a law that cars cannot exceed 5mph and must be encased in either nerf or bubble wrap to avoid injury to other drivers or pedestrians...

In any case, you're talking about crime rates because you're avoiding the truth of the matter. Cracked put it best:

In any case, please stop with this fakery and just admit the truth: you don't care about crime safety: you just want the excuse to be a badass and shoot someone.

"In other words, are they obsessed with security, or are they obsessed with the idea of getting to shoot some motherdraters? Are gun manufacturers selling guns they think people will actually use, or are they selling a fantasy? Are they, in fact, filling an emotional need?"

Linky, well worth a read

Would you stop trying to claim that Britain is a crime-ridden hell-hole? Some objective facts for you:

1: Our murder rate is way, WAY lower than yours. Even if it is rising (which I doubt), it's got a LONG way to go before it's even close to yours.

2: All crime is measured differently in different countries, so comparing rates for crimes other than those with obvious ways to measure them (such as murder) is pointless. For example, simply raising your fist in a threatening manner and not even swinging it could easily be classed as a violent crime in the UK, as causing fear of physical violence is the definition of assault in our law. It would be meaningless, then, to compare figures that include those crimes against figures for another country that would class that crime differently, if at all.

It's great that every responsible gun owner never does anything remotely foolish with them. It's the irresponsible ones you have to watch out for. That's probably only a million or so in America.

@Magentab0b I doubt it- if his crazy stabfest was so poorly aimed it didn't kill the guy, then I doubt his crappy aim with a gun would have been much different. Also, kudos on your quality choice in dating material!

I dated a dude who did three years for attempted murder. He was high as f.uck and some ass mistook his girl for a prostitute and tried to solicit her services. So he pulled a knife and kept stabbing the guy until his girlfriend pulled him off. If he had a gun he wouldn't have gone to jail cause he would have just showed the gun then walked away. Who am I kidding, he'd be in jail for murder.

Fair enough though I think it is very interesting/telling that you've cherry-picked data from a very arbitrary timeframe. Here's a more reasonable dataset:

Binge Drinking
30 Day Use

However, if we look across a broader scope of time, we'll see that the rates have been almost completely stagnant since the early 1990's. This is really interesting because the National Minimum Drinking Age Act went into action in 1985. Strangely, underage drinking rates had been plummeting before the act yet shortly after (laws take a few years to work - ask any Obama supporter) they leveled off.

I think this data is a bit more telling than the decade you chose to present. Do you a

"A license is required to purchase and consume alcohol, yet underage drinking rates show no signs of slowing."

Really? Among 12-20 year olds, rates of current, binge, and heavy alcohol consumption declined between 2002 and 2010. Since the 2002 National Survey on Drug Use and Health past month consumption has dropped almost 9% proportionately, binge drinking down 12%, and heavy alcohol use down 17%. 8 Gun Myths Debunked

Looks into this in depth.

Oh, that table below comes from CDC numbers (Center for Disease Control) not FBI, but I've read a lot of the FBI numbers and they say the same thing: blacks kill other blacks a LOT more often than whites kill other whites (given that they're 17% of the US population, eh?)

*boars I mean boars!

@MacGovern: Are you poking fun at @Canoas?

@SmagBoy: I know full well what you're saying, and can easily guess WHY too. But the fact remains that:
Gun ownership in the USA has gone UP
Gun Crime in the USA has gone DOWN
(by every measure you can apply: per capita, raw numbers, population adjusted & etc).

Meanwhile in Britain and Australia:
Gun ownership has fallen sharply.
Gun Crime has risen (or at least remained steady).
All other sorts of crime are UP (especially rape).

@AvatarJohn: iirc, this is straight from the FBI database. Blacks who live in places with HIGH gun control are killed at an alarming rate. In places with LESS gun control? That number falls.

Nothing in the "gun grabbers" arguments makes a lick of sense. Canada spent BILLIONS on "registration" and got exactly ZERO for it...

@Canoas

Are you stupid enough to claim that without auto-mobile licenses the same number of accidents would happen?

Are you foolish enough to expect that licensing has significantly affected the number of accidents that occur each year? I would argue that they actually make it worse by providing an artificially-low false standard.

Or that if no license is need for buying alcohol the teen-age drinking problem won't become any worse?

Any type of prohibition has a tendency to exacerbate the problem. Do you expect that, for the long-term, the problem is better or worse due to licensing? I suspect it is worse.

The examples you gave completely countered your own argument.

Perhaps is your convoluted view of the world - especially given your smug sense of self-importance. That sucks that you have to deal with the whole being European thing.

that table looks extremely biased. I mean, just look at the column titles.. "black" and "caucasian". It's either black and white or caucasian and african american.

Well, a-bombs and anthrax don't kill people on their own, either

Ummmm do you know how anthrax works???

As for the "DA AZSSAULT WEAPONZ IZ EBILZ" argument define an assault weapon. Handguns kill way more than thoes rifles you hate. Do you know what alot of people hunt wild hogs with? Are you aware how nasty wild hogs are?

5Cats, that's a fascinating chart. Did you know that when you correct for illegitimacy rates, the black and Caucasian murder rates are virtually identical? So it's not guns that kill people, it's single motherhood that kills people. Now we see the racism inherent in the (liberal) system, since they've been running the schools and the culture for decades!

SmagBoy1, actually, murder rates, especially those carried out by guns, have been dropping precipitously in the U.S. Especially since the end of the "assault weapons" ban.

In the U.K., on the other hand, where guns are outright banned altogether, murder rates are going up. Hmmm...

Also, he shouldn't worry about the spoons. It's the Big Mac's that are making people fat. He needs to try this out with a cheeseburger -- leave one sitting in his fridge for a week and see if it's made him gain any weight. I wouldn't turn my back on it though - they're crafty!
