I thought we were planning to solve the "problem" by paining rooftops and freeways white.
Another good approach would be for people to stop having too many babies.
I'm still hoping for a zombie apocalypse - that should set things straight. |

Ok, I don't even have to watch that to know that's now on the list of top ten most idiotic things I've ever heard of.
Or you could--oh, I dunno--take the approach of learning about something before passing judgment on it. Just a thought. |

This is more "Turning Grasslands Back Into Grasslands" than greening the desert, but I'd bet if this kind of rehabilitation was done on the edge of the advancing sand deserts, the tide could even be turned there, too. |

Nature has it's way of keeping things in check, if nothing is using the land, then it will go away. The only constant factor in his examples is the human one.
40,000 elephants!!!....jeez.
The main issue with his solution is that it relies on a constant moving, pastoral herd. A sedentary herd would just increase the problem by overeating. Meanwhile, the world is becoming increasingly sedentary, and many third world countries are being pushed/bullied into becoming farm based, and I'm not sure that everyone's lifestyle would benefit from a huge increase in meat consumption.
Like Crakrjack said, it's all a part of nature, and I hope that people won't forget to take into account the main factor that caused these issues, us (westerners) thinking that we know better. |

I believe what this scientist found was actually 'common sense'. When the great plains of the USA had huge herds of buffalo roaming around we had grassland that was over 8ft. tall. And despite the wildfires that would regularly burn a lot of it away, the buffalo would came back and replenish it.
Conservatives aren't averse to 'new' ideas, it's just that ideas like this aren't new, they've been a part of nature long before we started fencing in the land. |

Not a ecologist or climatologist here, but grew up in the desert, and often fantasized about greenlands and forests while watching Discovery channel or nature documentaries as a kid. When he got to "livestock are a curse to nature, we all know that." I immediately thought "Damn straight." So awesome how wrong I/he/we are.
Bring on the cows. I love burgers anyway. |

Wonderful lecture. It's great to hear of some hope in the face of all the climate and environmental challenges we're facing.
