Religion is really just a coping system for the weak. People that just can't stand thinking that there is nothing after death, or are afraid of death. Also, it helps answer the unknown. A long time ago when there was a whole lot of unknown, it made a lot more sense to just say "God did it!!"

uncontrollable feelings of anger towards the parents putting delusions in this poor kids head that his brother is living in the clouds, yes.

Religion isn't evil. It's people that use religion for evil purposes. Much like a gun is neither evil nor good, it's the people that use the item with ill intentions that create the evil. One example I'll give is the countless hours the Knights of Colubus Council I belong to have given to raise money for charity. We support all kinds of groups that help and defend the defenseless, like Special Olympics, More to the point, since none of us knows what happens to that which animates us after we die, then what's the downside to believing in life after death? Why not live a good life in preparation for that? Don't condemn the the entirety of religion based on the poor decisions of a small percentage.

The bottom line here is...it is the thought that counts. Did this child truely believe the balloon would reach heaven, probably not!!! This was a way of expressing her feelings, if any one of you had a heart or were ever a parent, you'd realize this has nothing to with religion, this child is remembering her brother on his birthday.
BTW if you are truely religious you would not be judging others!!! Get off your stupid high horse!!!!

I've found these things when out in the deep woods hunting. It's sad that heaven isn't a real place sometimes.

@Colors,

You're still wrong. In my quest to understand religion, I went to many different churches. I was baptized twice, once as a Catholic and once as a protestant. When I had learned everything there was to learn and understand about Christianity, I began to learn about other religions. Trust me when I say, I know at least as much as you do about Christianity and probably quite a bit more.

The brainwashing you underwent as a child, has fogged your view of things. With some work, you could be freed of the shackles of religion. However, if you continue to ignore facts and truth and blindly accept the fairy tales, then you are lost and doomed to perpetuate the hatred and evil that is religion.

To assume all branches of Christianity works as the one you were taught (and badly taught at that) is close minded. I won't engage in a religious battle because it seems you have already made up your mind on what you believe in, and it won't be worth my time to try and convey an argument you won't look at. I personally don't think the bible can be taken word for word at face value; but you have to look at it as a moral teaching. I think that's why the central way of getting into heaven is to accept Jesus as your savior, and God as the only God. If you wish to poke fun at religion, I won't stop you...I can't stop you. But to be as ignorant and harsh as you sheds bad light on everyone who shares your belief.

"The ignorance expressed by trolls on here is funny, you mock something you have never experienced."

I've got some bad news for you, sunshine. I was a practicing Catholic though my formative years. It was the idiocy and craziness of it all that made me question it. We were told that, if we even tried to question it, we would burn in Hell forever. Once I got the guts to really look at it, it fell apart like a crappy house of cards.

So, it not an "ignorance of something I've never experienced" but more so an understanding and evolving of intellect that YOU never partook of. But don't worry, if you have the bravery, you too can escape the lunacy and not look like a nutbar asking a magical sky wizard for wishes.

here is the ultimate failure of religion... accepting comfort in place of truth.

Great! While you're at it, can you let him know that I'm out of bacon. Surely your wish granting wizard can pull off something as simple as bacon?

@sbeelz- the post states that someone found it in their back yard. So...ostensibly, no.

I just have to question how old this person is. The age at which a balloon to heaven seems like a solid idea, and the maturity of word choice here seem at odds to me.

Oh well. I guess it doesn't matter anyway.

Knowing that the "faithful" are filling their lives with wasted time makes me feel so good inside, thank you.

What if the balloon gets in the way of an aeroplane and causes it to crash?
Also, there's no stamp on it. :( Can't send it.

@typoid- most likely, the girl who did this posted it on Facebook to share with friends and family. Fcuk people around here are cynical. Who gives a sh*t that she didn't precisely set her privacy settings to make the rest of the internet didn't see it? Who gives a sh*t if it gives her some solace to believe that her dead brother is up in heaven?

@patchgrabber. Good observation. So I stand by my original statement that it's her own fault for posting a pic of it.

There's snow around. I don't think balloons hold their gasses well in the cold.

Sad that we teach young people that a murderous deity exists. Sadder that we teach them that it is Earth centric...
