Monday, February 04, 2013 12:00:20 PM Watermelons are indiginous to Africa and were introduced to the Americas in the 17th century. They were originally grown mainly in the southern states (where most slaves were) and were one of the few foods that slaves would have been familiar with. |

Saturday, February 02, 2013 9:14:00 PM MacGuffin you should update your IAB profile to indicate that you are self-proclaimed Eurotrash and that you have not been anywhere in the world other than your own backyard. It will help others in the future understsand you are a wind-bag. |

Saturday, February 02, 2013 6:45:45 AM Being Eurotrash, I only just about got the reference in this item. Am I right in thinking this is a stereotype thing? That Blacks are stereotypically seen as having a penchant for fried chicken? I was just as bemused when someone made a reference to something involving Obama and watermelons one time: I'd no idea until a Septic friend explained to me that you guys have an unflattering stereotype of black people eating watermelon. It's amazing how some slights and humour are context-specific. Like Brits have stereotypical jokes about the Irish being stupid, the Scots being miserly and the Welsh being sheep shaggers. I doubt any of these would make sense to non-Brits, even if they were understood to be insults. |

Friday, February 01, 2013 10:13:06 PM "...chicken fried steak is steak with a "fried chicken" breading..." Dang it! @darkmagic14n has "outed" me! It's true, what I meant to say was "Steak Fried Chicken" which is widely known a "scnitzel" Schnitzel My bad, uncorrected, but the rest is true! Around here (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, North & South Dakota, Minnisota & several other places) it's a common, staple Mennonite dish. And OH-SO delicious! Man, IABers are a smart bunch! |

"Chicken Fried Steak" is a staple around here (Mennonite dish: it's flat, breaded fried chicken, served as if it were a steak" In Texas that was Chicken Fried Chicken. Not to be confused with Fried Chicken. Chicken Fried Steak was actual cubed beef {which isn't in squares don't ask} battered or breaded and fried. Same thing, just different meat. |

Friday, February 01, 2013 10:44:11 AM @LordJim - " ... it is a very convenient food to carry if you are travelling ..." That reminds me of the first year I was stationed at Camp Lejeune. I took leave to go home for Christmas but couldn't afford a plane ticket thanks to my measly $1500/month PFC paycheck. I ended up having to "Go Greyhound" and sit on a f*cking bus for 18 hours from Camp Lejeune, NC to NYC. At the second stop a black family of 10 got on the bus with big tupperware buckets full of fried chicken. I thought it was hilarious and had to harness every ounce of discipline I had to not laugh. Then they all started eating and the whole goddamn bus smelled like fried chicken for the rest of the trip. To this day the smell of fried chicken makes me nauseous. |

Friday, February 01, 2013 10:21:11 AM I've heard it suggested that the reason African-Americans are associated with fried chicken is that it is a very convenient food to carry if you are travelling and know that most restaurants won't serve you. |

Friday, February 01, 2013 9:51:48 AM @freddyferret: "Chicken Fried Steak" is a staple around here (Mennonite dish: it's flat, breaded fried chicken, served as if it were a steak: it has many names) and it's delicious! However, I'm pretty sure that "Steaking Chicken" is NOT illegal... |
