Thursday, January 31, 2013 11:29:54 PM Expecting it to be anything other than "jif" makes you not just a dumbass but an incorrect dumbass. The proper pronunciation, without any doubt, is "jif." All you brilliant thinkers shouting the old "The G stands for Graphic!" argument are simply wrong. You're thinking of the name of the FORMAT, not the resulting IMAGE. Does anyone EVER refer to the digitized picture as a "Graphics Interchange Format?" Of course not! GIF (though derived from the acronym) is a word in it's own right, the pronunciation of "graphic" is immaterial. When the format was created, the name GIF was always read as "gee-eye-eff" (a bit cumbersome, no?). When you say "G-I-F" enough it kinda naturally gets shortened to "jif". The "G" in GIF does not mean "graphic" but is actually the letter "G" thus "jif" (as in Gee) is the proper pronunciation. |

Thursday, January 31, 2013 10:14:06 AM Oh Ollie, you never disappoint! "he can't tell ME how to pronounce it" Has anyone EVER been able to tell you ANYTHING? You have to be one of the most close-minded people I've ever had the pleasure of loathing! "pretentious f***tard" Ironically, that phrase almost always comes to mind when reading your consistently derisive and offensive postings. |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 10:18:44 PM "The man invented it. He can names it, he says how it is pronounced." No, he can say how HE pronounces it, even if it makes him sound like a pretentious f***tard, but he can't tell ME how to pronounce it. |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 2:58:29 PM "you never have a hard G in front of an "I"!" giraffe, giant, ginger, gin... Also the "j" sound is a soft G, the words you listed are all hard G words. |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 10:22:42 AM @carmium, I'm no longer sure how to pronounce "Gin Gimlet"! I guess I'll just have to go with vodka or rum drinks from now on. |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 10:15:03 AM Give, gift, girl, gill, giddy, gig, giggle, gimlet, gimmick - you never have a hard G in front of an "I"! Because "gif" is so much like "gift" I think it unlikely you'll get everyone saying it as "jif." |

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 10:08:43 AM "I just keep thinking of Aluminium and why it is pronounced Aluminum over in the US" We always get blamed when the Brits can't make up their minds. Davy settled on aluminum by the time he published his 1812 book Chemical Philosophy: "This substance appears to contain a peculiar metal, but as yet Aluminum has not been obtained in a perfectly free state, though alloys of it with other metalline substances have been procured sufficiently distinct to indicate the probable nature of alumina." But the same year, an anonymous contributor to the Quarterly Review, a British political-literary journal, in a review of Davy's book, objected to aluminum and proposed the name aluminium, "for so we shall take the liberty of writing the word, in preference to aluminum, which has a less classical sound." |
