If you are inside that carriage you are still screwed, but reduced damage to those outside and quicker access for rescue crews. Also, some mitigation of damage to passengers if the safety windows allow the pressure out more easily and seats are not blown down the carriage.

Yeah if a bomb that size goes off in a rail-car? Everyone inside is pretty much toast.
Keeping the external damage to a minimum and allowing rescue crews in faster to help any who might have survived is still a good idea though. |

Definitely a mitigation technology that assumes those on-board have a very high likelihood of sustaining serious or fatal injuries so the point is to protect folks outside the car itself.

That's a good start but there's still a problem. When the first one blows apart all the pressure is released, but the prototype keeps the explosion contained which means the power of the shockwave would be multiplied. Some people don't realize that you don't have to hit by shrapnel or blown to bits to die from an explosion. If the shockwave from the explosion is strong enough it can turn your organs & tissues to mush. |

@CrackrJak surely trying to reduce shrapnel etc is a good thing? Like yeah if you're in there you're gonna be pretty drated, but if you can reduce the collateral damage then why not? |

Despite all that, you'd still be stuck inside a metal tube. the concussion alone in those confines could be enough to rupture your organs and kill you. At that point, whether the ceiling tiles or glass stays in place is irrelevant. |
