However, I also find that guys who have nothing to say are less interesting, and guys who don't assert themselves in a conversation come off as timid...

I don't know about that. One of the most annoying things I find about some men is their tendency to try and think on your behalf. It's by no means all, or even the majority, of them. But I've noticed that even some otherwise nice, 'normal' guys can have an unattractive tendency to try and dominate in conversations with attractive women that they're either party to or merely witnessing. It's always a major turn-off for me when they interrupt just to force their opinion on a conversation. The more intelligent/experienced guys, who're typically older, know that asking a woman for *her* opinion is far more flattering and appealing to her than merely talking at people and stating their (often uninformed) opinion.

If you don't like being interrupted all the time or listening to total nonsense, never learn Italian.

I'm probably around the 2,000 work mark too as my job actually requires me to not speak a lot of the time.

I should conduct this counting experiment on myself.

I'm usually the one interrupting people all the time because nobody ever goes out of their way to let me talk otherwise. I usually feel like people just don't want to talk to me because they never let me talk. As a result people tell me they see me as a very quiet person. Sometimes somebody finally decides I'm worth giving a chance and then they're like "wow and here I thought you were shy, suddenly you have a lot to say!"

I find guys who think about what they are going to say often come off mysterious and well educated. Needless to say it's a good thing.

However, I also find that guys who have nothing to say are less interesting, and guys who don't assert themselves in a conversation come off as timid...

InTheNameOf, I've no doubt single young women are more interesting to you, but I doubt its because of what they have to say.

"But I can see that no one wants to hear anything I have to say..."

At the risk of stating the obvious - to me what a young single woman has to say appears to be much more interesting to me than what an old married woman has to say

I am only willing to shup up if the contraire person has to say (implemented by the first few words and the overall topic headed to) something I care about... Sometime I, nevertheless, I shut up aswell when the other person is talking complete nonsense but that's because I just walked away :)

@Carmium: you were in a four-way with two customers and your manager?

It would be crass to discuss how much I make. But, of relevance to this topic, I sometimes find myself with a consultancy client that wants to interrupt me and talk over me in much the same way as this TOME describes. Whenever that happens, I just smile gently and internally calculate how much they're paying me to listen to themselves speak. :)

PS: That dog looked nothing like a Pekingese.

I don't think I speak even 100 words most days. I just don't talk that much unless I am being asked a question.

I was in a four-way chat at the store I worked in: two regular male customers, the manager, and me. The others were talking about a place we all knew, and at a pause, I started to tell a very brief account of what I'd seen there. About five or six words in, the others started talking over me. I continued: "But I can see that no one wants to hear anything I have to say, so I'll find something else to do." Nobody noticed. I moved own the counter and did some paper work until the customers left with friendly good-byes to me.
Trying being a woman when the men are talking. 8-\

Sooo true. I too have learned to stop when I am interrupted. And it's amazing to see how often, when they have finished their babble and there is an uncomfortable silence, they don't even have the courtesy to say "Oh sorry, what was it you were saying?"

There is something to be said for the quietness of being absolutely and totally alone. Sometimes silence is very enjoyable.

It is really weird to encounter someone that just wants to talk to hear themselves talk. I don't get it. If there are four people in your group you get to talk 25% of the time and get to listen 75%. If there are two people you get to talk half the time and get to listen the other half. I think people have just given up on learning from others.
