Having worked as a firefighter/paramedic for years, I can attest that this is quite possible. Looks to me loke a telephone pole. It always amazed me at the damage a car would sustain and the pole would still be standing, although the wire ususlly were knocked down. Cars are designed to collapse in an impact and I've seen many unusual and weird outcomes from cars hitting solid stationary objects.

@ferdy - the problem with a pole is the amount of force applied to a very narrow point. A strong pole is worse than a heavier broader point of impact.

I stopped as the firemen were just finishing at an accident site once, because I couldn't believe what I saw.
Rubber-neckers like you cause accidents. It really annoys me when people slow down or stop just to satisfy their own morbid interest by gawping at accidents. |

@Whodat, it was a tree, no real picture of the tree, and according to the msnbc report on this accident a year and a half ago, the cop hit a very slick part of the street and lost control, I'd imagine whilst making a left turn. |

I stopped as the firemen were just finishing at an accident site once, because I couldn't believe what I saw. A car had rolled and wrapped itself around a pole so badly, you couldn't - quite honestly - make out what it had once been. It had been left there because it was too tightly wrapped to remove without shears or torches. One of the firemen told me the occupants, plural, had survived with minor injuries! You just never know what happens. |
