HIV isn't AIDS. If it was, it'd be called AIDS.

Hey anti-GMO people, I trust you want nothing to do with this as it violates your hippie bullpoo.

oh god...90% of IAB will not be educated enough to understand this...

They took out Emma's T cells. They then inserted new genetic material into these T cells using an altered HIV virus...altered in a way that the HIV directs the T cells to attack bad B cells as opposed to HIV that normally just kills your T cells (for the most part). These altered T cells were put back in Emma, which attack the bad (and good) B cells caused by her type of leukemia. There is no HIV present in her body whatsoever.

I thought for sure I'd see a pedobear joke in the comments here. IAB, I am disappointed.

You should read about Coley's Toxins one time. There's so much potential in so many avenues of cancer research that just seem to have been forgotten about when catch-all ubiquitous approaches like radiation came along. These days a lot of people think the 'cure' is the same thing as the disease itself: they think losing your hair and feeling nautious are symptoms of the condition rather than of its conventional 'cure'.

How many of you just didn't read the whole article?? It clearly says:

"To perform the treatment, doctors remove millions of the patient’s T-cells — a type of white blood cell — and insert new genes that enable the T-cells to kill cancer cells. The technique employs a disabled form of H.I.V. because it is very good at carrying genetic material into T-cells. The new genes program the T-cells to attack B-cells, a normal part of the immune system that turn malignant in leukemia"

mikelae: No, She isn't 'infected' with HIV and therefore can't transmit it.

Fancysucksss: Ever heard of fighting fire with fire? Well this is sort of the same thing except they aren't actually using HIV, just it's biological cellular keys.

Interesting therapy, definitely requires further study.

Wait, she has cancer curing HIV? Does that mean she can transmit it sexually? When does she turn 18?

Well I'll be damned..What if somebody has aids and cancer? I'm pretty sure getting double aids wouldn't be somebodies ideal way to live.

@Gerry
It might have something to do with having HIV cells in the lab to genetically alter and experiment with. The ones already infecting someone are kinda "in the wild" and a teensy bit harder to feck with, genetically speaking. (Or it could be that lifetime meds bit, I wouldn't put it past them.)

They aren't actually using HIV to kill cancer, but anti-retro virals that work like it. It's very complex new hi-tech biology. I've heard they are working with something similar to this involving Bee Venom, as well.

Short answer, no she's not going to died of AIDS now.

They can genetically alter HIV to kill cancer, but not to, oh I don't know.... stop killing it's host?

I sometimes wonder if they're really trying. There's so much money to be made if you get them on lifetime meds.

Oh, and YEAH for the kid!

I don't mean to be an ass or anything but AIDS is the syndrome caused by the HIV virus. And the HIV virus in this instance was deactivated so the patients do not have the virus.

I saw that on the news a few days ago. Fascinating. Apparently the kid was VERY sick for awhile like a really bad flu, but then, voila.
